The Head Works Programme

In conjunction with the Kent Schools Wellbeing Programme we have sought to provide Wellbeing support for Headteachers through a programme of seminars called Head Works. We launched the Head Works Programme in response to evidence that although Headteachers devote a lot of time to caring for the wellbeing of their staff but often neglect their own health and happiness. The Programme has been running for 5 years and is fully sponsored by Towergate Insurance.

The events devote workshop sessions to Personal Wellbeing and Wellbeing Management. There is a speaker or demonstration to help Headteachers relax and unwind. Previous speakers have included- Ray Mears on leadership skills; the actor Ben Walden who gave a presentation on strategies for stress management based around the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur; Simon Weston who spoke about his personal experiences whilst serving in the Welsh Guards during the Faulklands War; demonstrations from chefs on quick and healthy food preparation; and stress relief therapy including reflexology, Indian head massages and hand and foot massages. These events also provide an excellent opportunity for Headteachers and Senior Management to network and share experiences and techniques.

We aim to cater for around 200 Headteachers and members of Senior Management a year, and in previous sessions 213 individuals benefitted from a Head Works Event and we aim for a similar uptake this year.

We have received useful and positive feedback from our previous Head Works events. Here are some comments from participants:

“Made me step back and consider health issues of all staff as well as my own”

“Ray Mears- inspirational!!! Real insights into leadership as well as extremely entertaining.”

“A reaffirmation of the importance of valuing staff wellbeing- it is not the soft option!”

“This recharges your batteries and motivates for the next day at school.”

“Brilliant- glad Kent recognises the need. Great lunch- good networking opportunities”

“Improved self-confidence so I am working more effectively- I feel rejuvenated.”

The Next Event - Autumn time (details to be confirmed)  - Cultivate your Curriculum with Monty Don

Gardening is fast becoming an important item on agendas across the education arena.  It provides opportunities for increased scientific knowledge and understanding, aids pupil's confidence, resilience and respect for themselves and their environment.  For Headteachers it provides an opportunity to relax and unwind at the end of a hectic day or week.  We are delighted to have Monty Don share his experiences working with youth groups, promoting gardening and working in the natural environment.
