14 Quirky Things You Didn’t Know About Kent

Because it’s more than just the Garden of England

1. Ever wonder where Mick Jagger and Keith Richards first met? Wonder no more because they met at Dartford Railway Station. (Whilst we wouldn’t suggest idly hanging out at a train station, we do recommend exploring Bluewater for food, retail therapy and the blue water that surrounds it.)

2. If you want to be at one with the place the Beatles filmed “The Magical Mystery Tour”, then head to West Malling. Roll up (We've got everything you need) in this historical market town, take a tour for yourself; you never know it might be a mystery tour…

3. If you want to see the sun, head to Folkestone. It averages almost 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, making it one of the sunniest places in the whole of the UK *insert smiley emoji here*.

4. If you like paranormal, then Pluckley is where you need to be. Home to at least 15 (alleged) ghosts, it has been reported that Pluckey is the most haunted village of the UK. We’re not too sure about the ghost of the “Watercress Woman”… we’ll let you investigate that one.

5. Sticking with the haunted theme, if you’re brave enough then Dover Castle houses its very own Ghost walk…

6. You don’t need to visit Dubai to see a desert, Dungeness is classified as Britain’s only desert by the MET Office.

7. If you thought Pocahontas was purely a Disney princess then you haven’t visited Gravesend. A bronze statue of Pocahontas can be found at St George’s Church Graveyard, to mark Pocahontas’ final resting place.

8. Hammer Horror hero Peter Cushing lived in Whitstable, if you’re a fan then get yourself down to the Peter Cushing Museum in Whitstable.

9. We’re a big fan of tea in Kent, that’s why we have Teapot Island, there’s 76,000 teapots in the exhibition and 4000 teapots for sale…that’s a lot of tea!

10. We’re pretty Noble in Kent, that’s why Nobel-prize awarded novelist William Golding worked as a teacher at Maidstone Grammar School.

11. In case you were fretting about paranormal Pluckley, we wanted to let you know that it’s also where “The Darling Buds of May” was filmed…not so scary after all. 

12. Ok, so not exactly a Kent fact but we do love a quote: “Of all the British tribes, by far the most civilised are they who dwell in Kent.” Julius Caesar.  Albeit Kent has changed somewhat since Caesar’s times, we certainly still think we’re civilised in the Garden of England.

13. If you’re inquisitive and want to know where you would find Britain’s oldest Brewer, it’s the Shephard Neame here in the quaint market town Faversham, Kent of course.
