Non-Executive Member - BCAT Board of Trustees

The Barton Court Academy Trust seeks to appoint a new non-executive Member to join an established Board of Members to provide additional capacity as the Trust grows in size.

The Trust

Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT) is a multi-academy Trust which was established in 2017.

It currently consists of three secondary schools: Barton Court Grammar School, an 11-18 years, mixed selective school in the heart of Canterbury, rated “Good” with many outstanding features by Ofsted in February 2020, and The Charles Dickens School, an 11-16 years mixed non-selective school in Broadstairs, which came out of special measures and is rated “Requires Improvement” by Ofsted in June 2019 and is a rapidly improving school. Barton Manor Free School, is an 11–18 years non-selective mixed school in the heart of Canterbury which opened to Year 7 in September 2022.

The Role

We are looking for a Non-Executive Member to join and already established and experienced team of Members in ensuring that Academy Trustees are exercising effective governance by:

appointing & removing Academy Trustees
appointing & removing Members
directing Academy Trustees by special resolution to take specific action where Trustees are unable or unwilling to act in the best interest of the Trust.
amending the Trust's Articles of Association
appointing & removing auditors
This is a voluntary role requiring a high degree of confidentiality but a low level of commitment requiring just 2-3 hours per year to fulfil the required expectations.

If you feel you can offer additional experience and expertise from outside the educational setting and can provide additional challenge and support from a different perspective then please provide a CV and a brief personal statement about your skills and reasons for applying to the Clerk of the Governing Body, Mrs Kirsty Mclean, (clerk@bartoncourt.org) for the attention of the Chair of the Trust.

If you would like to know more about the role or speak to an existing Member then please do contact Mrs Mclean who can facilitate this.

In line with KCSIE 2022 guidance and as part of the shortlisting process, the Trust reserves the right to conduct an online search on shortlisted candidates as part of our due diligence and any relevant information found concerning a candidate's suitability to work with children will be discussed at interview stage.

The Barton Court Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The post is subject to an Enhanced Disclosure application via the Disclosure & Barring Service and check against the ISA Barred List for Children.

BCAT VALUES Achievement Challenge High Aspiration Independent thinkers Equality Valued Excellence

We place the child first in all that we do and to all that we aspire. We are uncompromising in our desire to sustain improvement, deliver on standards and provide an outstanding educational experience for all. We are forward looking, equipping our young people with the skills, knowledge and aptitude to succeed but also strive to instil traditional values of hard work, resilience and respect for others. Despite the complexity of MAT organisation we remain in agreement with Professor Hargreaves (Self Improving School Systems, National College for School Leadership) who stated “Great classrooms make Great Schools” and Great schools therefore make a Great Trust. We are a school-based Trust that agree with this simple, yet profound statement.
