Nexus Foundation Special School

Governors

We asked some of our Governors to introduce themselves;

Andrew Chauvin:
“I am a Chartered Surveyor and local resident of Tonbridge and have spent a large part of my career working in Education, mostly building new schools. I spent two years working for the Department of Education and became interested in learning more about how schools were run and organised. I also believe in volunteering and giving something back to the local community, so I joined the Governing body of Ridge view (now Nexus) in March 2015. "

Nicola Cordran:
"I joined the governing body in December 2012 shortly after my son started at the school. My motivation for joining the governing body was to help improve the outcomes of the children and young people at Nexus. I am aware from my own experience that our pupils and their families face significant challenges. As a member of the governing body I am passionate in ensuring that all initiatives help improve the lives of Nexus pupils."

Penny Lavender:
"I joined Nexus as a governor almost 2 years ago having spent most of my working life as a teacher.   Right from the start I was impressed by the enthusiasm and energy of the staff to help the children reach their full potential. Visiting the classrooms is always a rewarding experience observing the pupils engaging with the many different learning experiences they are offered. As a governor there are often difficult decisions to be made, particularly in the current economic climate, but all options are discussed and priorities decided upon to enhance the quality of education and care given to the pupils.  In the last year there has been the exciting and rewarding process of moving to a new, purpose built school; it is still work in progress as staff and children settle into the new environment and the new opportunities it creates. I am pleased to be a member of the governing body of such a forward looking and caring school."

Laraine Faulkner:
"Originally I thought there is no way I am the sort of person who is School Governor material; I am totally disorganised at times , very argumentative , and very very busy with my family life; and then I thought this is exactly the sort of person who makes a good Governor; Someone who will say what they think but appreciates being a team player. I have a child at Nexus and had the opportunity to help her school and her in the coming years. As I now realise it is a very important and very fulfilling job and I am very proud in a small way to help make a difference."

Anna Williamson:
"I joined Nexus when it was originally Ridge View just over 13 years ago after being asked by the then Headteacher.  Having a background in education personnel I jumped at the chance to support the school with my skills and experience and play a strategic role in setting the direction for the school.  I enjoy my time working closely with the Senior Leadership Team and the other governors to make Nexus School an amazing and exciting place for pupils and a supportive environment for staff to work.  As governors we are committed to improving the outcomes for the pupils at the school, ensuring that staff are developed and enabling them to fullfil their potential and regularly monitoring the performance of the school against the strategic vision and the school development plan. For many years we have been working hard to improve the physical environment of the school and the recent move to an amazing new building has been such an exciting and rewarding time for everyone connected with the school, it also  opens up so many new opportunities for the pupils, staff and the wider community."

As the Chair of Governors, Anna has also written a welcome letter which you may wish to read.
