Welcome to Northdown Primary School!
Our Primary school was established as an Academy by The Kemnal Academies Trust in 2012. We are one of a number of Primary schools supported by TKAT across the South East of England. Through working within a Multi-Academy Trust, we are in a privileged position to collaborate with other schools and receive the first-hand experience of immediate and significant teacher training which enables us to be innovative in our approaches to 21st-century teaching practice.
Through our ethos of ‘I Can…’, we believe that every child can succeed. We ensure that our children develop high aspirations, self-belief, and an understanding of their world and their community. We believe that the mastery of reading, writing, and mathematics are the cornerstones that allow children and young people to build a happy, self-determined, and fulfilled life.
The extensive school grounds, consisting of a large playing field, playground, forest school area, and planters, allow us to bring the curriculum alive with various opportunities to teach the children in the outdoor classroom - making learning high-spirited and engaging. We recognise that the local area has many opportunities to teach the children important life skills so we are developing the Northdown Beach School.
All staff at our school strive to build upon our vision of children and families 'exploring new horizons - raising aspirations' through supporting the community in many different ways and often the unexpected. We recognise the importance of having strong relationships with parents and the community, and the impact it has on learning outcomes. Through our communication mobile apps, parents are never further than a click away from up-to-date information about their children’s lives at school.
‘The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited’ - Plutarch
It is our belief that all children are afforded the opportunity to attend a school that wholeheartedly believes in a child’s individual journey and guides them through the joys of growing and developing as unique people.
At Northdown, we believe in creating an environment where all children are valued and their voices heard so that the education we deliver is tailored to the children of our community. We recognise that our community is influenced by many cultures, beliefs, and life circumstances that shape the present lives of our children.
We believe that education is a fundamental human right and we are proud to serve these children and their community. We are committed to promoting the long-term collective well-being of all the children entrusted to our care and are committed to supporting children’s positive mental health.
Through our ethos of ‘I can…’ we invest in the core values of Harmony, Curiosity, Courage, Determination, and Aspiration which are intrinsic to a developed curriculum that recognises the unique makeup of our community. We are committed to taking the children on a journey of challenge and self-discovery through new experiences to promote growth, both in mind and body.
We intend to nurture the full potential of all children by encouraging them to:
Become independent, resilient, and ambitious learners:
Be confident and curious with a thirst for knowledge;
Exhibit harmony through respect for oneself and others, including physical and mental wellbeing;
Responsible members of the community who make a positive difference to society;
We believe that our curriculum should be broad and balanced. Our children's backgrounds, our culture, and our climate for learning provide the following drivers that underpin all areas of our curriculum:
· provide a safe, stimulating learning environment for all children and teachers;
· enable children to achieve their full potential by learning in a variety of ways and through challenging learning experiences;
· provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that will motivate, engage and challenge children whilst also equipping them with the skills required on leaving school;
· develop inquisitive minds, a spirit of curiosity, and a passion for learning;
· physical well-being and mental well-being are both valued and prioritised by our careful consideration of curriculum design;
· SMSC development, along with a well-planned and structured program of personal development underpins all our work;
· set high expectations for all children to raise their aspirations; and
· raise standards of both teaching and learning.
We want children to love to learn and through their engagement in learning they develop their confidence, resilience, and independence. We do this through an evolving, engaging curriculum. At the heart of our thematic curriculum is an emphasis on English and drama, independent enquiry, reflective thinking, and collaboration. The thematic curriculum provides accessible opportunities for personal enrichment through a very wide range of visits and visitors; special days and themed weeks.
Here at Northdown, our curriculum is designed to take the children on an exciting journey of discovery; exploring new horizons in all corners of the world, learning how the events of the past have shaped the present, and uncovering how today we are contributing to the lives of tomorrow.
Through a thematic approach, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum that nurtures curiosity and enthusiasm to take on new challenges and experiences which immerse the children in new worlds, cultures, beliefs, and influential moments of history; to enable them to develop an appreciation of the world around them.
By equipping the children with the skills and knowledge needed to be responsible and respectful citizens, we believe that our teaching and learning experience allows the children opportunities to remember, revisit and transfer skills and knowledge to other contexts.
The fibres of each subject are intrinsically woven into the fabric of our unique curriculum where reading, writing, and maths skills are utilised to develop a secure knowledge and understanding of the world around us.
Our fundamental belief here at Northdown is for every child to have unequivocal access to a safe and enjoyable learning environment where individual needs are recognised and supported through an effective teaching approach that promotes success for all.
All staff, volunteers, and parents share the ‘I Can…’ ethos through a strong partnership whereby each stakeholder recognises their responsibility and fully contributes to ensuring that each child receives the best possible opportunities to fulfil their potential through open and honest communication.
We are committed to keeping children safe and proactively search for ways to support children and families in need of a little extra support through the work of our Community Outreach Team and partnerships with other agencies. This prevention support underpins our dedication to safeguarding the safety and well-being of our children.
