Valley Park Learning Mentor 

Valley Park School is a large over-subscribed mainstream non-selective secondary school.

We are currently recruiting for a Learning Mentor to join our foundation learning team to provide 1:1, small group and class-based support to meet the needs of identified students. You will be crucial in supporting students with their learning, development and progress in all areas of the curriculum and within a range of learning contexts.

Key roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Developing a 1:1 mentoring relationship with students identified as needing support.
  • Developing and providing personalised learning support as needed across the curriculum to support individuals or identified groups of students.
  • Devising, implementing and evaluating individual student action plans to enable students to access learning activities and raise achievement.
  • Attending lessons with students to support them in the classroom as necessary.
  • Assisting students to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills across the curriculum
  • Liaising with the Head of Foundation Learning Department, HOY & SENCO to identify students where there are barriers to learning.
  • Developing strategies for identified target groups and individuals as agreed with the Head of Foundation Learning Department, HOY & SENCO.
  • Supporting individual students in developing strategies to develop their study skills, organisation and revision techniques.
  • Assisting students with their homework, coursework, organisational skills etc. in order to provide additional support.
  • Raising student self-esteem by showing interest not only in their work but their general well-being.
  • Delivering and using a range of specific SEN assessments to gain further understanding about a student’s strengths and difficulties.
  • Supporting with the development and ongoing maintenance of the SEN Resource Centre- developing and filing appropriate resources; keeping up to date records of support given and the impact of it.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

Essential:

  • To have a knowledge of different learning styles and approaches, including an understanding of barriers to learning.
  • To have experience of working with students to review and improve their learning skills and strategies.
  • To be willing and able to work towards gaining any relevant qualifications, attending training and to take responsibility for your own development.
  • Be able to adapt your communication style and be able to develop skills to suit the needs of the students that you are working with.
  • Able to work supportively as a team member and able to take own initiative when working independently.

Desirable:

  • Learning Support qualification
  • Experience of using specific SEN assessment tools to find out more about a student’s individual strengths and difficulties.
