Would you like to work in an outstanding special school?

If so, we are looking for an enthusiastic, passionate and motivated HLTA to work at The Beacon to provide high quality cover for all classes within our primary zone.

Hours: 8:50 to 3:25 Monday to Friday, term time only plus five inset days (39 working weeks per year)

Salary: KR6 £20,222 - £22,072 (pro rata to £14,266 - £15,527 term time) depending on experience plus £1,274 SENA.

The successful applicant will be working within a dedicated highly skilled, friendly and supportive team who continually strive to ensure all children make excellent progress from whatever their starting point is, because learning is personalised and expectations are high.

The school prides itself on providing our students with much more than academic support within lessons and we are looking for people willing to commit to providing the very best all round education for these exceptional young people.

The role includes:

  • Working in collaboration with teachers to plan, deliver and assess lessons for PPA cover within the identified zone
  • Organising, managing and delivering learning activities to pupils, adjusting activities according to pupils’ needs and selecting/preparing necessary resources to lead learning activities, providing feedback in order to support pupils’ learning.
  • Monitor and evaluate pupil responses to learning activities through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against pre-determined learning objectives, providing feedback and reports to teachers in order to provide evidence of the range and level of progress and attainment
  • Be flexibly deployed according to the changing needs of the pupils and school

This role provides an exciting and excellent opportunity to work in a new, high quality and well-resourced environment and to work with an established, experienced and highly motivated team.

The successful applicant will have a good standard of education with a minimum requirement of English and Mathematics at GCSE (C) or equivalent.

As part of the interview process if shortlisted, you will be observed working with children, and so a visit to the school to gain an understanding of our ethos and practice is advised (contact lauren.scott-smith@thebeacon.kent.sch.uk should you wish to book a visit).

The Beacon is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Please note that this post is subject to an Enhanced DBS and receipt of two acceptable references.

Information about the school

The Beacon is a multi site, all age specialist school (4–19 years) providing high quality education for 480 pupils with complex needs, profound and severe learning difficulties, and physical and sensory impairments. Our main site is located on Park Farm Road in Folkestone, our newest provision in Walmer opened in September 2025. We also operate a 10 place satellite provision at Castle Hill Primary School and work collaboratively with Beacon Plus as an extended partner of the school.

The Beacon is built on a strong culture of cooperation and a commitment to personalised learning. Our child centred, needs led curriculum draws on the EY Foundation Stage, the National Curriculum, and relevant accreditation pathways, with an emphasis on Life Skills, Social Skills, and holistic development.

As a centre of expertise, we also deliver training and support for mainstream schools through our outreach team. This dedicated team provides professional development, advice, and guidance to colleagues across the region. Our conference and meeting facilities regularly host nationally recognised speakers and professional learning events.

We are also home to a Multi Agency Support Hub, one of four centres across the county, bringing together NHS professionals, paediatricians, speech and occupational therapists, nursing teams, children’s social care, and portage services. This integrated approach strengthens the support available to children and families across the Folkestone and Hythe district.

At The Beacon, our shared moral purpose is to improve educational outcomes and life chances for all young people. We believe excellence is achieved through partnership, collaboration, and reflective practice. Our peer to peer coaching model and staff led learning communities help ensure consistently high quality teaching and a culture of continuous improvement. We expect the highest standards from ourselves and all stakeholders, creating an environment where every learner can thrive.

If you share our values and are inspired by our mission, we look forward to hearing from you.
