Five Acre Wood Special School, Maidstone, was selected by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) to become a teaching school in May 2018. School leaders developed the LEAF Teaching School, “Leading Education and Achievement For all”.

LEAF Teaching School offers a unique opportunity for those looking to train as a mainstream primary teacher. Located in the Maidstone, area LEAF has strong partnership links and works with a number of local, mainstream and special primary schools. We can offer aspiring teachers superb opportunities to train in excellent mainstream schools with the second teaching placement based in a special school. Our graduates will start their teaching journey with an unparalleled expertise in SEND, equipping them with the knowledge, qualities and skillset to begin their careers as proficient primary teachers who can meet the increasingly diverse needs of primary pupils.

LEAF has long established links with Canterbury Christ Church University which has a reputation for delivering one of the largest and most diverse School Direct Programmes in the country. Our combined aim is to shape our trainee teachers into outstanding practitioners who are at the forefront of excellent practice for all pupils.

Information about the school

Peggy Murphy, the Principal, has been identified as a National Leader of Education and has worked closely with mainstream school leaders to develop provision for SEN pupils locally. We have a number of partnership schools within the Maidstone area who are joining us on our teaching school journey by providing salaried, school placements for ITT candidates. We work with Canterbury Christ Church University, our accrediting institution, who provide a comprehensive training programme.
