Learning Mentor Opportunity

“Change a child’s tomorrow—be their mentor today.”

We are seeking to appoint a highly skilled and compassionate Learning Mentor to join our Academy and work across all phases. This is a key role for a committed professional who is passionate about supporting children to thrive, both academically and personally.

The successful candidate will be:

  • An experienced and motivated practitioner, dedicated to enabling every child to achieve their full potential.
  • Skilled in prioritising and providing targeted support for children whose learning may be affected by social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.
  • Able to build secure, trusting relationships with pupils so they feel confident to seek guidance and support.
  • A strong communicator who works effectively with parents and carers, acting as a ‘Parent Champion’ to strengthen the partnership between home and school.
  • Confident in addressing a wide range of issues, including attendance, punctuality, behaviour, emotional regulation, friendships, and home life.
  • Experienced in working alongside outside agencies to ensure children and families receive the right support at the right time.
  • Proactive in organising extra-curricular workshops and opportunities for children and their families.
  • Knowledgeable about community resources available to support families.
  • A collaborative team player who works well with teaching staff, senior leaders, and the wider school community.
  • Responsible for reporting directly to the Head of Inclusion and maintaining the highest standards of safeguarding, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • An experience of the Boxall profile, ELSA, Nurture or Thive programmes would be desirable, although not essential.

We can offer you:

  • A purpose-built, well-resourced learning environment.
  • A warm, supportive, and dedicated staff team.
  • Enthusiastic, polite, and happy children who enjoy learning.
  • Ongoing professional development and training tailored to your role.
  • A community committed to making a genuine difference in the lives of our pupils and families.

We look forward to being able to show you around our wonderful school if you are interested.

Information about the school

St Nicholas CE Primary Academy is situated in the heart of New Romney, surrounded by beautiful grounds and equipped with excellent resources to support its 15 classes and more than 420 pupils. Our over-subscribed and well-maintained school was judged Good with Outstanding features by Ofsted in May 2019 and again in 2024.

We are proud to have a committed and enthusiastic team of staff who are dedicated to enabling every child to reach their full potential. We provide a stable, caring and stimulating environment where children are happy, eager to learn and inspired to achieve their best. Our curriculum and ethos cater for a wide range of abilities, encouraging all pupils to thrive and succeed.

As a Church of England school, we have a strong Christian ethos and close links with St Nicholas Church in New Romney. These connections enrich our collective worship and underpin our school values.

We are fortunate to have an outstanding private nursery on site, which also offers breakfast and after-school club provision, as well as a Children’s Centre, further supporting our families and the wider community.

Our academy is also home to a Specialist Resource Provision (SRP)—a 14-place provision for children with an Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) designation. This inclusive setting sits within the mainstream academy, ensuring children benefit from both specialist and integrated learning experiences. St Nicholas also proudly holds the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Centre of Excellence Award.

Located in the ancient Cinque Port of New Romney, our school enjoys a rural Kent setting with excellent transport links: just 20 minutes to Ashford, 30 minutes to Folkestone, 45 minutes to Canterbury, and around 45 minutes from Hastings for those travelling from East Sussex.

We warmly invite you to visit our school and experience first-hand the unique qualities that make St Nicholas CE Primary Academy such a special place to learn and grow.

At St Nicholas CE Primary Academy, safeguarding is at the heart of all we do. We are committed to promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all trustees, staff, and volunteers to share this commitment. Successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, along with other relevant employment, online, and overseas checks where applicable. All new trustees, employees, and volunteers undertake safeguarding training as part of their induction, with regular updates in line with statutory guidance.
