An exciting opportunity to become a School Governor with Swale Academies Trust.

We are looking for new governors to provide localised challenge and support to our schools throughout Kent, Bromley and East Sussex.  Our school governors are volunteers who work closely with their school to ensure it provides the best possible education for all its students.

Becoming a governor is an excellent form of volunteering and can be a very rewarding experience. Governors have a vital part to play in ensuring pupils develop and thrive academically, socially and culturally in the safest environments possible.  There are lots of opportunities to learn new skills, working with others to help benefit the education of children within our schools.

We welcome governors from a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and experience to join our team.  No specific qualifications or experience are needed; the most important qualities for any governor are a commitment to the welfare and achievement of the children, a desire to make a positive contribution to the school, common sense, and a willingness to commit time to the role.

The role of a school governor includes:

  • Attending LGB meetings termly. These are held six times a year, either during the school day or early evening (depending on the school), and can last up to 2 hours. Please do allow additional time for reading the agenda and report documents prior to each meeting;
  • Providing a fresh perspective and challenging the school leadership to continuously improve;
  • Supporting the Headteacher and holding them accountable for educational performance;
  • Scrutinising the school's finances for reassurance that resources are used effectively;
  • Being a champion for the school in the local community;

The experiences of school governorship look great on any CV and can create career opportunities in the future.

Information about the trust

Since its creation in September 2010 Swale Academies Trust has become a strong and successful school improvement service, specialising in taking schools in Ofsted category and turning them into good schools. A glance at the most recent Ofsted reports for Westlands Primary School, Meopham School, The North School, Regis Manor School and The Sittingbourne School, will all point to the effectiveness of the Trust in bringing about change and providing and enabling excellent leadership. First and foremost Swale Academies Trust is about the provision and development of high quality leadership and management.

We don’t seek to develop clone schools that deliver education in a regimented manner. Rather, we value the development in our schools of a spirit of enquiry and action research that provides the best possible education that is right for pupils in a local setting. We do however collectively value and strive for all pupils to produce beautiful work which showcases their development over time of which they, their teachers and support staff and parents can be really proud. We are proud of our schools and we strive for a sense of shared pride in the achievements of all of our students.

Our ambition is driven by enabling schools and children to succeed. We have a wide range of excellent and highly accomplished senior leaders who lead with a sense of purpose, charisma and a set of shared values. The Trust is fortunate to be overseen by a Board of Directors who share leaders’ values and who provide the highest quality challenge and support.
