The Governing Body, children and staff of our thriving school are looking for a creative and enthusiastic SENCO to join our team. This will be a permanent appointment.

At West Malling we pride ourselves on a positive, professional culture where we work supportively together to achieve the best outcomes for the children in our care.  We know that if we, as professional staff, let our light shine, then so will the light of our children. Inclusion is at the heart of our school and our teaching, ensuring that learning opportunities are accessible to all, and we are seeking a dynamic and inspiring SENCO who shares this inclusive vision.

The position is part-time for three days per week, and the SENCO will be responsible for the day-to-day provision of pupils with additional needs. Our ideal candidate will hold a recognised SENCO qualification (NASENCO) or show a willingness to achieve either this or the forthcoming NPQ for SENCOs.

We can offer:

  • Fantastic pupils and a friendly and nurturing school family.
  • Support from an experienced, passionate Speech and Language SRP team committed to excellence with high expectations.
  • A committed leadership team, friendly and dedicated staff and a supportive Trust and governing body.
  • A well-resourced school with an exciting curriculum.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Shares the vision and values of the school and aims for excellence at all times.
  • Has a passion to make a difference and is a good communicator with a real ability to nurture, inspire and motivate vulnerable pupils.
  • Has experience of working within a school and supporting pupils with their learning.
  • Will be the Designated Teacher for Children in Care.
  • Has a sense of humour.

We warmly welcome informal visits to the school to meet us and see whether this is the school for you. Please contact the school office by phone or email to arrange a mutually convenient time. Full details of the interview process will be provided to successful shortlisted applicants, but candidates should expect to give a short presentation on an aspect of SEND provision and complete a panel interview. References will also be checked ahead of any interview, so please ensure referees can be contacted via email.

The school is committed to inclusion, safeguarding & promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Information about the school

West Malling CE Primary School is a thriving, successful, one-form entry primary school set in attractive grounds on the edge of the historic town of West Malling, in one of the most beautiful parts of Kent at the edge of the North Downs. Our vision is to "let our light shine" as children and adults.

Our school is small with a caring, friendly environment, where it is possible to know all our children and their families. We have high expectations within a supportive and positive community where every child genuinely does matter and is treated as the unique individual they are. We are fortunate to be supported by the local community of West Malling and as a Church of England school, we have strong links with St Mary's Church in the village.

The school was last inspected by OFSTED in January 2023, where it was found to be "Good" in all areas. Inspectors noted that "pupils are happy and thrive in this caring school. Children develop very positive friendships with one another". It was highlighted that we "provide a well-sequenced and ambitious curriculum" and that teachers "make effective use of their time in class".

The school is "Good" under the SIAMS framework (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools, March 2022) which found "the Christian vision is woven through school life so that the community actively embrace inclusion and flourishing. As a result, pupils express their thoughts and act with certainty".

We are proud to be a member of the Tenax Schools Trust.

We are ambitious and aim to maximise the potential of all our children and staff.
