We are seeking to appoint a forward-thinking and dynamic Deputy Headteacher who is aspirational about their future leadership development and growth.

You will already have significant leadership and line management experience and be able to effectively lead and inspire a staff team.

Following a successful secondment (now moving on to headship), St John's is looking for a permanent Deputy Headteacher to take a lead on teaching and learning across the school.  Do you have a clear focus on teaching and learning, alongside a strong commitment to children’s well-being?   Are you committed to professional development and educational research?  Can you support and inspire a brilliant staff team?

At St John's we believe in nurturing each individual pupil in order for them to reach their full potential. We are looking for a Deputy Headteacher who has high expectations for all children, who believes in implementing a stimulating and creative curriculum and who recognises the importance of supporting others to drive school improvement.  If you share this ethos then this is the school for you!

What can we offer you? We are committed to investing in staff development through ongoing training, and can offer tailored opportunities for your professional development.  You will be working in a vibrant community in the heart of Canterbury, with excellent facilities including an award winning library, a Forest School area and a comfortable staff area.  We are a school where staff voice is highly valued.

Visits to the school are encouraged. Please contact the school office to arrange.

If your application is successful you will be invited to attend an interview.

Information about the school

In 2024, Ofsted graded St John's as a good school in all areas.

The school, based in the heart of Canterbury, is a larger than average primary school, with two classes in each of Years 1 to 6. The school has provision for Early Years Foundation Stage children, with a nursery and two reception classes. The school is a Church of England voluntary controlled school.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and the school reserves the right to carry out online checks on shortlisted candidates as per KCSIE guidelines. Our Child Protection Policy can be found in the Policies section of our website: https://www.stjohns-canterbury.kent.sch.uk/page/?title=Policies&pid=30.
