What does a school governor do?

The role of a school governor is to contribute to the work of the governing body in ensuring high standards of achievement for all children and young people in the school by:

  • setting the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils; and
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

As you become more experienced as a governor, there are plenty of opportunities to explore a variety of  roles, some of which could increase your degree of involvement and level of responsibility (e.g. as a chair of a committee).

If you would like to learn more about this role, please do read the attached description and visit our school website to learn more about the school. If you have any questions. please direct them to the Company Secretary, Sarah Corbett.

Ready to Apply? If feel that you could help in this vital role please do apply via the STS careers page on our website.

Information about the school

STS is an 11 to 18, mixed, secondary school that has an excellent reputation across Kent where "Pupils engage well in learning. They enjoy their lessons and behave well. Pupils show respect for each other and value the work their teachers do to support them" (OFSTED May 2019).

The success of our students from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form is due to the ‘can do, will do’ attitude that is the hallmark of staff and students alike. At STS we ‘Hold fast that which is good’: a broad and engaging curriculum; interesting, inspiring and innovative classroom practice; as well as a whole host of enriching extra-curricular activity. Throughout their time at STS the students are provided with quality advice, support and guidance to help them progress and grow academically, personally and vocationally. We recognise and celebrate diversity and understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is inappropriate for the unique individuals we serve.
