Do you have a financial background?

We are looking for people like you!

Could you share your skills and make a difference?

We are looking for an individual with a financial background to fulfil the role of our Finance link Governor. Within this role you would work closely with the Headteacher/School business manager (SBM).

You're not expected to be an expert, but you need to work closely with the headteacher/SBM to get the insights you need to help the board hold the school to account and drive improvement.  You will meet with the SBM so you're clear on your school's financial processes (e.g. the budget approval process), and so you can ask them questions.

Be the board's specialist

Your role is to act as the link between Governors and the Headteacher/SBM and to report to the board on things like:

  • How financial resources are being used and how this links with the school improvement plan (SIP) and budget
  • Report to the board on what questions you've asked the SBM about the budget (the SBM should update the board on the budget and how it's been scrutinised in general through a report)
  • Ensure any relevant finance policies that need to be in place, are operating well within the school
  • How your school's financial position compares to similar schools
  • Local and national developments which would affect your school's finances, e.g., an increase in National Insurance contributions.
  • Attend relevant training so you can keep up to date
    • Bring your more detailed knowledge of finance to important decisions (for instance, about school improvement priorities).

If you would like to learn more about this role, please do read the attached description and visit our school website to learn more about the school. If you have any questions, please direct them to our Company Secretary, Sarah Corbett.

Ready to Apply, if feel that you could help in this vital role please do apply via the STS careers page on our website.

Information about the school

STS is an 11 to 18, mixed, secondary school that has an excellent reputation across Kent. The School gained new leadership in January 2025, with an emphasis around building a strong school culture and promoting wellbeing for everyone who is part of the school community.

The success of our students from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form is due to the ‘can do, will do’ attitude that is the hallmark of staff and students alike. At STS we ‘Hold fast that which is good’: a broad and engaging curriculum; interesting, inspiring and innovative classroom practice; as well as a whole host of enriching extra-curricular activity. Throughout their time at STS the students are provided with quality advice, support and guidance to help them progress and grow academically, personally and vocationally. We recognise and celebrate diversity and understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach is inappropriate for the unique individuals we serve.
