Higham Primary School

Local Area

Higham Primary School is located in the village of Higham, in the Borough of Gravesham, near to Rochester with circa 4000 inhabitants. Higham is a large linear village that dates back to Saxon times, originally as Lower Higham in the north and later stretching south to form Higham Upshire along the road between Rochester and Gravesend. The school is located in School Lane between Lower Higham and Higham Upshire.

Higham is most famous for its literary connections with Charles Dickens living in nearby Gads Hill Place from 1856 to 1870. Some of his novels including Great Expectations were set in the locality.

Higham is close in proximity to the A2 and M2 motorway and has excellent rail links west to London or east towards Gillingham. Higham is on a direct train line to the London terminals of Charing Cross, Cannon Street, London Bridge and Blackfriars via Gravesend, Dartford and Woolwich Arsenal. The train journey to London terminals takes approximately an hour.

The village is a short drive to the historical City of Rochester, bursting with historical buildings including Rochester Cathedral and Rochester Castle, which is a popular destination for tourists visiting quaint, unique independent shops, restaurants, bars and pubs.

In the opposite direction is the maritime town of Gravesend, the resting place of Pocahontas and another busy town with well known national high street retailers and restaurants.

Sports and leisure are an important part of village life with the Recreational Ground situated opposite the school, tennis courts, junior clubs for football and cricket, horse riding stables, a dance school, youth club, plus active flourishing Rainbows, Brownies Guides, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scout Groups. Many of the children at Higham Primary school belong to one or more of these clubs and groups.

Further afield there are the senior sports teams of League One Gillingham, Conference Premier Ebbsfleet United and Southern Counties Rochester United, plus the National Hockey club at Holcombe. Again, former pupils from Higham Primary school have connections to these clubs.

The unique location on the border of the Gravesham and Medway means that our pupils have the opportunity to move on to a diverse range of secondary schools in both areas.
