St John’s Church of England Primary School (Voluntary Controlled) is a distinctive, one-form-entry primary school located in the heart of Sevenoaks. Often oversubscribed it is well regarded in the local community and offers something unique in the town. The school is rooted in its vision and values, of ‘All different; all equal; all learning together in God’s world’. It also uses the parable of the good Samaritan for its theological vision, expecting our children to make that difference in the world, while also recognising that at different times they may take on the role of any character in the story. At the heart of this vision is the belief that every individual should be valued, encouraged, and nurtured to achieve their full potential.

In our most recent Ofsted (Section 5) inspection, St John’s was graded ‘Good’.

There are currently 209 children on roll, including:

  • 19 pupils supported through Pupil Premium

  • 21 pupils on the SEND register, with 3 holding an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

St John’s is a community of support and challenge, where both pupils and staff can flourish. Visitors frequently comment on the children’s confidence and the school’s engaging curriculum and breadth of opportunities and we are always looking to broaden these further. Our teaching team is a vibrant mix of those who are highly experienced to those early in their careers. Together, they share a commitment to collaboration, inclusion, and ambition for every child. We are passionate about delivering an engaging and inspiring curriculum whilst ensuring inclusive learning experiences. Wellbeing is embedded in everything we do, and academic excellence is pursued together with personal development.

We enjoy strong, productive relationships with our Governing Body, parents, local church, and the wider community. St John’s plays a key role in the Sevenoaks Partnership of Schools, collaborating with other local schools to share best practice and promote high-quality professional development.

Our learning environment is stimulating and carefully maintained. We are proud to offer high quality PE, as well as French and a dedicated forest school area, enhancing the richness of our curriculum. We are always looking for new ways to develop and enhance our curriculum, reflecting a local community. We provide a breakfast and after-school club, along with a wide variety of extracurricular activities, although we would always like to add more opportunities. The school currently runs a balanced budget with the support of an experienced bursar, although the challenges of educational funding are apparent to us and require careful decisions and clarity of purpose.

We know we are not the perfect school and know that there is always more to do; we want a Headteacher who is committed to ensuring St John’s is always offering the very best in education, in opportunity, in growth of children. Being a Headteacher is an demanding job, we need you to have energy and drive to continually challenge us to better. We embrace and want good and natural change.

We maintain close links with the Church of St John the Baptist. Church festivals are celebrated regularly, and the parish priest leads worship and is a familiar pastoral presence within the school.

At St John’s, our aim is for every child to leave as a confident, resilient, and compassionate individual, ready to contribute positively to society and lead a fulfilling life.
