St Margaret's-at-Cliffe Primary School

Local Area

St Margaret's-at-Cliffe Primary School is located in the lovely village of St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.  St Margaret’s at Cliffe is a small village, located near to Dover in the east of Kent. St. Margaret’s at Cliffe is a place of natural beauty, historical significance, and community spirit. It is a great destination for those seeking a peaceful and picturesque coastal retreat while still having easy access to larger towns like Deal and Dover.
One of the village’s major draws is its natural beauty. The White Cliffs of Dover, a symbol of Britain’s coastline, are nearby and can be explored via the South Foreland Lighthouse. There are also several scenic coastal walks and opportunities for birdwatching along the coast.
The village has a rich history, dating back to Roman times. Its proximity to the coast made it strategically important throughout history, and during World War II, it played a significant role as a lookout point for potential invasions.
The village is made up of four areas, the old village St Margaret’s at Cliffe, grouped around a 12th century village church, the residential area of Nelson Park, St Margaret’s Bay and Westcliffe.

The area has fantastic transport links; Deal, Walmer, Martin Mill and Dover Priory stations offering trains to central London and other Kent towns including Canterbury, where you can visit the Canterbury Cathedral, which is one of the oldest Christian structures in England. The areas is also served by a number of local bus services.
Nearby the town of Deal, where the North Sea and the English Channel meet is approximately 5 miles from St. Margaret-at-Cliffe and approximately 8 miles south of Ramsgate. It is a former fishing, mining and garrison town whose history is closely linked to the anchorage in the Downs. Close to Deal is Walmer, a possible location for Julius Caesar's first arrival in Britain.
Deal became a 'limb port' of the Cinque Ports in 1278 and grew into the busiest port in England; today it is a seaside resort, its quaint streets and houses a reminder of its history along with many ancient buildings and monuments. In 1968, Middle Street was the first conservation area in Kent.[1] The coast of France is approximately 25 miles from the town and is visible on clear days. The Tudor-era Deal Castle, commissioned by then-King, Henry VIII, has a rose floor plan.
Deal has a non-League football club Deal Town, which plays at The Charles Sports Ground. The rugby club, Deal & Betteshanger Lions plays at the old RM Drill Field off Canada Road. Deal Rowing Club is located on the seafront north of the pier.
There is a farmer's market on Wednesday which sells local produce, as well as a long-running market on Saturday. The town has an independent retail sector in the North End of Deal High Street, and a number of chains on the High Street.
The Lighthouse Music & Arts Venue offers live music and arts events. The Astor Theatre in Deal offers musical performances, live theatre, exhibitions, films, classes and clubs
Dover, approximately 3 miles from St Margaret’s at-Cliffe, is a town and major ferry port in Kent,. Across the channel is France and the area is most famous for the stunning chalk cliffs known as the White Cliffs of Dover.  Because of its location, throughout history Dover was considered to be of great strategic importance and the fortress of Dover Castle was known as the ‘key to England’ providing defence for over nine centuries.
