Nurturing the potential in everyone

St. John’s is a school with a Christian foundation and we welcome all children and adults into our community. We want our children, families and staff to know that they are valued, cared for and to be happy. We want our children to be passionate about learning and to equip them with the tools that will enable them to flourish academically, emotionally and spiritually. We have delightful children who love our school and are enthusiastic about their learning.

1 Corinthians 12 v 12 says,
‘there is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body.’

We are a popular, oversubscribed primary school, with 630 pupils on the roll, situated within the heart of our community in Tunbridge Wells.

We believe that every child is an individual with different needs and that it is our role to ‘Nurture the Potential in everyone’. We hope that when children leave us they are ready for secondary school and that we have provided them with foundations for life. We try to develop individual talents and personalities, as well as stressing the importance of responsibility and independence. Our children are encouraged to fully participate in all school life has to offer them.

Christian values are at the heart of all we do and our Christian ethos is very strong. We have strong links with our parent Church of St. John’s and enjoy the excellent relationship we have with them.

We offer a vibrant curriculum which is designed to inspire a passion for learning. Our goal is to engage and empower children whilst ensuring the skills and requirements of the National Curriculum are covered in a broad and balanced way. We also aim to deliver a curriculum that promotes a positive growth mindset, which reflects the interests of our children, our context and the world we live in today. The curriculum is supported by a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including a diverse range of clubs, workshops, educations visits and visitors.

We aim to ‘foster a passion for learning’ in our pupils through our five core school values: Honesty, Respect, Empathy, Courage and Inclusivity.

With the aim of ensuring that all members of our school community have their individual needs met, we are very proud of the additional interventions we have in place to help those children for whom a more personalized and differentiated approach may be required at certain times in their education.

We have a small, specialist intervention group for children with EHCPs, or who are likely to receive one during their primary education led by three members of staff. Within this group, there is a focus on the areas of communication, interaction, cognition and learning, speech and language, whilst following the EYSF stage statutory framework or the National Curriculum, which are highly personalised and differentiated in order to address their needs. As much as possible, these children also maintain daily contact with their home class where they are able to access certain parts of the curriculum based on their individual needs and abilities.

We also have a short-term Nurture Group, for children who have been identified as having additional needs within the social, emotional and mental health category. Run by a team of three, who have been trained by the Nurture Group Network, pupils receive intensive support for up to four terms, with the aim to reintegrate fully back into their home class from the fourth term onwards. While limited in the numbers it can support, the team has had excellent success in helping children reintegrate into their home class, with improved behaviour and educational outcomes, as well as a very positive impact on the whole class.

We aim to promote positive mental health for every member of our school community, through whole school approaches and specialized, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable pupils. We have a Mental Health and Wellbeing Team, fully trained Mental Health First Aiders and a school counsellor who all work together to promote positive mental health at St. John’s. In the last year, we have also trained some of our Year 6 pupils to be Wellbeing Ambassadors. We were also recently awarded the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools ‘School Mental Health Award’ Bronze status, in recognition of the work we have been doing.

Our school have lovely grounds, with extensive playgrounds and a large playing field, including a dedicated forest school area, a clamber stack, hut village and outdoor classroom. In the Reception play area, there is a large trim trail, fairy garden, vegetable patch, water play and sand pit, plus numerous other activities to encourage play among the children.
