Aylesham Primary School

Local Area

Aylesham is one of the largest villages in east Kent, set within beautiful rolling countryside between Canterbury and Dover. People have been living in the village since 1927 when it was built to house the miners’ families who were working in Snowdown colliery. The original layout of the village was built based on the vision of renowned architect and town planner, Sir Patrick Abercrombie, and from the air resembles a coal mine shaft. It is now a rapidly expanding village with new houses being built. This is bringing in families from all areas, creating a diverse and vibrant village.
Sandy beaches, chalk cliffs, picturesque villages and relatively inexpensive property prices (compared with many other parts of the South East) make this area an attractive place to relocate to. The Port of Dover and Channel Tunnel are only 13 miles away giving easy access to the continent whilst the high-speed train from Dover or Canterbury give rapid access to central London.

There are a variety of small shops and businesses within Aylesham (a large Co-op supermarket, Boots, take-aways, cafes, butchers, barbers, sweet shop) whilst Canterbury City centre offer a wider range of shops as well as restaurants, theatres and cinemas. Regular buses run to Canterbury and Dover as well as train links which continue through to London.
There are various clubs and activities for all ages in the village as well as a new skate park, outdoor gym equipment and a well-equipped leisure centre. The 3 churches (C of E, Catholic and Baptist) hold Sunday Services and are involved in various community events including beer festivals, pantos and table top sales. Aylesham also boasts a local library. For the walkers, there are lots of lovely walks in the surrounding area in beautiful Kent countryside with the North Downs Way passing close by.

There is a very strong community spirit in Aylesham with families all happy to help each other and anyone in need. Lots of fundraising events take place for charities close to villagers’ hearts. You are quite often met when walking around the village with a cheerful "Hello" or a "Good morning/ afternoon". Recently there was a "Fayre on the Square" which included Snowdown Colliery Welfare Band, local groups and entertainment. The village has a longrunning carnival association and holds its own fair and carnival every September which boasts to be the largest village carnival in Kent whilst Christmas events include carol singing around a community Christmas tree in the market square.
