This post of communication support worker will require you to work as facilitator for a profoundly deaf pupil who is currently in Year 3. This pupil has a cochlear implant and you will need to liaise with a London based Cochlear Implant Team, the local teacher of the deaf and local speech and language therapy services. The pupil will require you to use sign supported English alongside a range of other suitable interventions to ensure that she is able to access the spoken language of her teachers and her peers throughout the school day and possibly at after school clubs. You will need to support the pupil in following a programme of speech therapy and auditory training. You will be supported in delivering such programmes by the professionals listed above.  

 You will need:

  • An ability to work as part of a team
  • Good communication skills including British Sign Language to at least Stage 3; ideally working towards Stage 4
  • An understanding of the social, emotional, learning and language needs of a deaf child
  • A willingness to learn how to carry out daily checks on the pupil’s cochlear implant
  • Willingness to carry out individual speech and language programmes and to promote the development of listening skills (under the guidance of relevant professionals)
  • An ability to distinguish between when to use your own initiative and when to seek help or advice
  • The ability to form caring, supportive, relationships with the pupil while promoting independence
  • To provide regular feedback to the class teacher and to other involved professionals regarding the pupil’s progress

Information about the school

Reculver Primary School is part of Aquila, the Diocese of Canterbury Multi Academy Trust. We are also part of the Coastal Alliance Co-Operative Trust as a partner school. We are a high achieving school with high expectations, and as a result Ofsted judged us as Outstanding in all areas when they visited in July 2018. We are a friendly school by the sea with 17 classes, approximately 510 pupils on roll and we promote a caring, inclusive ethos. The school has a specialist resourced provision for VI and Cognition and Learning and we are committed to quality, inclusive education for all our pupils. The school has benefited from modernisation projects over recent years including a new administration block, new Early Years classrooms, an Year 5/6 block and enhancements to playground facilities which give our children opportunities to develop their social/interaction skills. We are lucky to have a wonderful outside area that we use to the full whenever possible. We are a happy team, who work together closely and the school has a real family feel to it.
