As a Kickstart apprentice you will have the opportuniy to learn from experienced colleagues and become a valued part of our team, developing the skills required to become a school Teaching Assistant.  You will work under instruction and guidance from the Assistant Headteacher/teaching staff and undertake learning and pastoral support for pupils enabling them to access learning.  You will also assist the teacher in managing pupil behaviour and the daily routines of the classroom. To apply for this apprentice position you must be aged between 18 and 24 and be in receipt of universal credit. You will need to apply via your work coach who will give you a reference number to quote in the application.

 Main Duties: 

  • Promote pupils’ development in a safe, secure environment 
  • Have regard for the safety and wellbeing of the pupil 
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in teacher led learning 
  • Help children who need extra support to complete tasks, including those with special educational needs and disabilities 
  • Prepare the classroom for lessons, showing good organisation, ensuring the classroom remains tidy and purposeful 
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour 
  • Take part in training, meetings and reviews as appropriate 
  • Support the development of displays of pupils’ learning to reflect their achievement 
  • Establish excellent working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and setting high expectations 
  • Provide consistent support to all pupils, responding appropriately to individual pupil needs 
  • Promote inclusion and access for all pupils 
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance and direction of the teacher 
  • Assist with supervision of pupils during breaktimes 
  • Assist with pupil’s personal needs including toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating 

You will be part of a year group team and will be supported by a class teacher and a qualified Teaching Assistant.  You will have a named mentor who will be part of the school’s leadership team.  Support will be provided through daily coaching and weekly meetings. 

As part of the scheme you will undertake a qualification with Learn Direct to gain a Level 2 NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning.  The school will provide appropriate ICT access and support to complete this qualification.  This will require part time study outside of core working hours. Additional appropriate training to develop the your skills will be sourced and funded by the school on the same basis as opportunities provided to the school’s qualified Teaching Assistants.   

Additionally you will be mentored in the creation of a CV and completing job applications. 

In-house practical training will ensure you are able to build a portfolio to evidence the relevant work experience gained to support any Teaching Assistant applications you may make.

Our popular, heavily over-subscribed school, which has 420 children on roll, is located near to the town centre of Tonbridge, about 5 minutes walk from the main line railway station.

We have 14 classes from Reception through to Year 6.
