An exciting opportunity has arisen at our small village school. We are seeking a Teaching Assistant to work as part of our small but committed team, supporting pupils with specific learning needs both 1:1 and in small groups, initially in our mixed Year R/Year 1 classroom.

Ideally, candidates will have experience of working with children in a variety of settings and environments, bringing with them good communication skills to allow pupils the opportunities to develop social skills, positive behaviour patterns, raise self-esteem and improve independent working skills.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be eager to quickly develop an understanding of how children learn through specific training and independent research;
  • Be confident to work alongside existing staff to meet the needs of pupils just beginning primary school;
  • Be able to show empathy towards the children, managing difficult situations with care and understanding;
  • Be optimistic, enthusiastic and committed to working collaboratively with colleagues to provide a high quality learning environment;
  • Be able to work under the direct supervision of class teachers, and help ensure the care, welfare and achievement of all children;
  • Be a ‘hands on’ practitioner who is able to use their initiative;
  • Provide general support to staff and pupils including preparation of resources;
  • Have a warm, yet professional manner towards colleagues, pupils and visitors at all times, and contribute to the positive ethos of the school.
  • Be committed to going above and beyond in the best interests of our children.
  • Have GCSE Maths and English at grade C or higher.

The hours for this post are flexible, between 20 to 30 hours a week, with a mixture of mornings and afternoons preferred.  The contract would initially be for one academic year.

Information about the school

Our unique school is situated in the beautiful countryside of Kent, nestling at the bottom of Stumble Hill in Shipbourne village. It is a small school which has served the community since 1852. We have the capacity for approximately 60 pupils, most of whom children come from the immediate vicinity and further afield from villages, such as Hadlow and Plaxtol, as well as Tonbridge.

Our school is a nurturing environment where children are not afraid to take risks on the way to becoming life-long learners. Everything we do is centred on our school values, resulting in an engaging curriculum that prepares children for more than just their next academic step. We are supported by a highly valued community of parents and governors, have a track record of strong attainment and provide a programme of tailor-made professional development to ensure every member of staff reaches their true potential to the benefit of our children. The school has a very active PTA which supports the school in a range of ways to raise money to help us meet the changing demands of life in the 21st century, whilst still retaining the intimate nature of our small school.

The school is currently organised into three classes. Our unique setting and school structure allow for focused teaching to meet the ability and personality of each child; staff get to know pupils quickly and tailor their lessons to facilitate effective learning for all. We take great pride in our nurturing environment and everyone is treated as part of a family: all lives are enriched through sharing and collaborating as we prepare the children for an exciting future in which they can be both independent and aware of the feelings and needs of others.
