Job Purpose:

To supervise pupils during the lunch period in the dining hall, playground, and/or classroom, ensuring a safe, caring, and positive environment that promotes good behaviour and hygiene, encourages social interaction, and supports the welfare and safety of all children.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Supervision of Pupils:

  • Supervise children in the dining area, ensuring they are eating safely and appropriately.

  • Assist pupils with using cutlery, opening lunch items, and encouraging healthy eating.

  • Monitor behaviour and intervene as necessary to prevent disputes or accidents.

  • Ensure pupils move safely to and from the dining area and play areas.

2. Health, Safety & Hygiene:

  • Ensure children follow handwashing and hygiene routines before and after eating.

  • Clean up spillages and ensure the dining and play areas are left tidy and safe.

  • Report accidents and incidents in line with school policies and procedures.

3. Behaviour Management:

  • Promote positive behaviour and address inappropriate behaviour calmly and fairly in line with the school's behaviour policy.

  • Encourage inclusive play and positive social interactions among pupils.

4. Pastoral Care & Support:

  • Offer comfort and reassurance to children when needed, especially younger or more vulnerable pupils.

  • Be alert to any signs of distress or safeguarding concerns and report to the appropriate staff.

5. Teamwork & Communication:

  • Work closely with other midday staff and teaching staff to maintain consistency and good communication.

  • Attend regular training and team meetings as required.


Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Enjoy working with young children and have a caring, patient, and friendly manner.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions and school procedures.

  • Basic understanding of health & safety and safeguarding (training will be provided).

  • Good communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working with children, especially in a school setting.

  • First Aid and/or Food Hygiene training.

  • This post is subject to an enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.

  • The role is term-time only and excludes school holidays.
