We are seeking to appoint a Design and Technology Technician to join our popular, well-resourced and high-achieving Design and Technology department. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a successful and supportive team, working in a department with excellent student uptake and outstanding outcomes at both GCSE and A-level.

The Department

Our Design and Technology department is housed in a large workshop with an attached classroom, food technology room and ICT room and is exceptionally well equipped. Facilities include:

  • A wide range of woodworking tools and machinery
  • Metal lathes
  • Plastic forming equipment
  • CNC laser cutter
  • Vinyl cutter/plotter
  • 3D printer
  • A Food Technology suite

All students study Design and Technology in Years 7, 8 and 9, with strong uptake at GCSE and A-level. Student achievement is consistently high. The department currently comprises a Head of Department and a Design and Technology teacher, and the successful candidate will be line managed by the Head of Department.

The Role

The successful applicant will play a vital role in supporting teaching and learning by maintaining a safe, organised and well-resourced workshop environment. The role includes:

  • Preparing materials and components for lessons
  • Ordering, organising and maintaining stock and resources
  • Carrying out regular health and safety checks and equipment maintenance
  • Supporting students during practical manufacturing tasks
  • Contributing to extra-curricular activities within the department
  • Playing a full part in the wider life of the school community and supporting the school’s ethos, policies and routines

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Good knowledge and experience in the use and maintenance of general workshop machinery and tools
  • Knowledge of a range of materials, tools and manufacturing processes
  • Health and safety knowledge relating to workshop machinery
  • Experience of CAD/CAM systems (such as 2D Design, SolidWorks, laser cutters and 3D printers) – desirable but not essential, as training can be provided
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships

Information about the school

Oakwood Park Grammar School is a five-form entry (usually 160 in each year) Boys’ Grammar School of currently 1095 students. We have a co-educational Sixth Form of 311 students. Entry at 11 to the school is through the Kent Test (11+) where students sit three papers in Mathematics, English and Reasoning.

We have been on the site since 1959 and we share an attractive campus with two schools (St Augustine Academy and St Simon Stock) and a college of Further Education (Mid-Kent College). This gives the site a unique feel with over four thousand students.

Our teaching and support staff are dedicated and hardworking and very loyal to the school.

Oakwood Park Grammar School has a wealth of extra-curricular activities for its students. Sport is very strong with national success in football, alongside rugby, cricket, basketball and athletics. We also cater for rowing, fencing, table tennis and climbing. Music and Drama are also popular with an annual production. We also have other extra-curricular activities such as robotics, debating and chess.

Academic standards are high at both GCSE and A Level. In the Sixth Form, on average, well over half of our students who apply to universities will secure offers from prestigious Russell Group universities and we regularly send students to Oxbridge colleges.

We were graded Good overall by Ofsted but did achieve Outstanding for our Behaviour and our Sixth Form provision.
