The postholder will deliver high-quality Chemistry teaching across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, fostering academic excellence and enthusiasm for Science. They will also have active participation in the boarding school community, supporting students ' overall development through tutoring, co-curricular activities, and evening and weekend boarding duties (rota system).

Key Responsibilities

  • Set high standards in planning, teaching, and assessing KS3 Science and KS4/5 Chemistry.
  • Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and understanding of curriculum progression.
  • Design effective, creative lessons aligned with objectives and learner needs.
  • Apply a wide range of teaching and behaviour strategies to support all learners.
  • Assess accurately and give constructive, developmental feedback.
  • Monitor and support student progress, addressing underperformance as needed.
  • Maintain clear, supportive communication with parents.
  • Ensure learning continues during student absences.
  • Promote collaboration through cross-curricular links.
  • Support and monitor the welfare, academic progress, and behaviour of a tutor group, working closely with teaching staff, the Housemaster/mistress, and parents.
  • Participate in weekday and occasional weekend boarding duties, including supervising meals, prep time, and evening routines.
  • Help organise House activities, attend pastoral meetings, and contribute to the school’s wider co-curricular programme.

Further Information 

This is a full-time, permanent role within the Science Department, starting in February 2026. The salary will be paid on the Main/Upper Pay Scale, and the position includes an additional allowance of £6,953 per annum for boarding duties, clubs, and activities.

Established in 1803 by His Royal Highness Frederick, Duke of York, The Duke of York's Royal Military School has a rich history rooted in educating the children of military personnel. Originally located in Chelsea, the School relocated to its current site in Dover, Kent, in 1909.

Today, the School offers full, weekly, and flexi boarding options for over 500 students aged 11 to 18. Operating on an independent School model, it provides high-quality education, a wide range of extracurricular activities, and outstanding facilities.
