Join Our Team as a Student Welfare Officer!

37 hours per week • Term Time + 5 days
Salary: HBHS Band 6 (£25,002–£26,383 pro rata)

Are you passionate about making a difference in young people’s lives?
Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same?
Would you love a role where your presence helps shape the culture of the entire school?

If yes — we’d love to hear from you!

What “Term Time Plus” Means

This role follows the school calendar, meaning you work during student term time only, plus an additional 5 days across the year for essential training, preparation or key school events.

Although you do not work all year round and your salary reflects this, your salary is spread evenly over 12 months, giving you consistent monthly pay while enjoying significantly more time away from work during school holidays.

This structure offers the stability of set hours alongside a healthier work–life balance than a typical full-year role — perfect for those who value both meaningful work and personal time.

Why This Role Matters

As a Student Welfare Officer, you’ll be a key part of our pastoral heart. You’ll help create a calm, supportive and purposeful atmosphere where students feel safe, understood and encouraged to make positive choices.

Your work will have a direct, daily impact on student wellbeing — making this a truly meaningful role for someone who cares deeply about young people

    • Removing phones or other contraband
    • Supporting students who are struggling to meet expectations

Restorative & Pastoral Practice

  • Act as a Restorative Justice Facilitator, helping students repair harm, rebuild relationships and move forward positively
  • Support students in understanding behaviour and making better choices
  • Assist Heads of Year by taking clear, accurate statements following incidents

Safety & Operations

  • Help ensure the school site remains calm and safe throughout the day
  • Receive training in first aid, fire marshalling, and minibus driving to support wider operations

What We’re Looking For

Someone who is:

  • Calm, confident and unflappable
  • Naturally great with young people
  • A clear communicator with a supportive, positive approach
  • Energetic and proactive around the school
  • A team player who thrives in a busy pastoral setting
  • Keen to undertake training and grow within the role

  • A role full of variety, impact and meaningful connection

Information about the school

Herne Bay High School is a large hugely successful Single Academy Trust that serves the Herne Bay coastal area of North Kent. We have a comprehensive intake and are significantly oversubscribed in all year groups and in June 2022 Ofsted rated the school good with an Outstanding 6th form provision.

Whilst academic rigour and examination success is at the forefront of our development, we passionately believe that a broad, balanced approach to education is important and as such we place great emphasis on the Creative and Performing Arts, Technology, and Sport as a key part of a young person’s early educational journey. Herne Bay High School is also a champion of collaborative practice.

Safeguarding Commitment: At Herne Bay High, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. As such, all applicants will be required to undergo comprehensive child protection screening, including checks with past employers, the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS), and Barred List Checks. If you share our commitment to safeguarding and child welfare, we encourage you to apply.
