Do you like helping students learn? Do you want to work with engaged and motivated young people? Are you looking for classroom experience?

We are seeking to appoint an experienced, assured and dependable Language Assistant to support our students in the French Department. The role includes working one-to-one with students in KS4 and KS5, predominantly on their French speaking skills. A successful candidate should have an awareness of the requirements of the AQA A-level speaking examination and the Pearson Edexcel GCSE 2024 speaking examination.

Foreign Language Assistants play a crucial role in promoting and supporting the creation of an environment that enriches and enlivens the students’ language studies by engaging each student in spoken and occasional written activities. It is the Department's belief that these activities are most effective and enjoyable when they are supported and developed by individuals who are passionate and understand the culture, traditions and current affairs of the countries in which the language is spoken.

This is a part-time, permanent position offering an actual salary £3,861 per annum (£24,404 Full Time Equivalent), based on 7 hours per week, term time only. As our academy timetable works on a fortnightly basis, the role will be 14 hours spread across a two week period.

If you have any questions regarding the role, please contact Sarah Rose, PA to the Headteacher, on sarah.rose@sjwms.org.uk.

Information about the school

Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in order to provide an education to young men who would go on to work at the famous Chatham Dockyard. More than 300 years later we still pride ourselves on providing a superb academic education alongside an unparalleled range of opportunities for personal growth and character development. Awarded ‘outstanding’ in our last Ofsted, the comment that stands out to us is, “students thrive within its distinctive ethos, enabling them to succeed academically and to develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared extremely well for their future lives.” Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School (or ‘the Math’ as it is known locally) is a boys’ grammar school with 1450 students on roll that admits girls in the Sixth Form. The school became an Academy in April 2011 and is very popular and regularly oversubscribed.

In 2012 the School became one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools and in 2021 was successful in converting this into becoming one of the first 35 National Teaching School Hubs. Alongside our work as a National Support School, our position in Leigh Academies Trust and as the lead school in the Kent and Medway Maths Hub the school is in unrivalled position to offer superb support and training to any new member of staff, regardless of their role, or their experience.

Ofsted judge the school to be ‘Outstanding’, a grading the school has held since 2005. In our last report the lead inspector noted that ‘ Pupils and students are thoughtful, polite, courteous and respectful. The school’s culture helps them to feel safe and happy. Their behaviour is exceptional. Pupils have extremely high ambitions. Parents and carers are enormously positive about the school .’

Our Visons and Values Our aim is to support young people in becoming happy, confident and active citizens, ready to play a leading role in whatever walk of life they choose. We do this by ensuring our students do achieve the best possible academic outcomes, while at the same time encouraging them to play a full role in the wider life of the school.

Five core values underpin our work: - We ensure the highest standards of achievement; - We provide all students with an exciting, challenging and enjoyable curriculum that will prepare them for a rapidly changing, technology dominated world; - We promote courtesy, acceptance and respect for others; - We place great emphasis on personal development and well-being; - We work in partnership with parents and the wider community.

"We are a National Support School and the Principal is a National Leader of Education. The school also became one of the first 100 schools in the country to have been designated a National Teaching School and as such is the lead school in the Thames Gateway Teaching School Hub. It is also the lead school in the Kent and Medway Maths Hub, one of just 35 lead schools in the country." - Eliot Hodges, Principal
