Herne Bay High School is seeking a motivated, reliable, and enthusiastic Science Technician to join our dynamic and supportive Science Department. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about science and education to play a key role in supporting practical learning in a busy secondary school.

Whether you’re looking for a full-time, part-time, or apprenticeship role, we welcome applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Please clearly indicate in your application which working pattern you're interested in.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing, setting up, and clearing away apparatus and materials for science lessons
  • Assisting teaching staff during practical's, if needed
  • Maintaining & organising laboratory equipment, and reporting any issues
  • Following Health & Safety guidelines, including CLEAPSS (training provided)
  • Adhering to safeguarding procedures in line with school policies

You will report to the Senior Science Technician and Head of Faculty, and will work closely with a team of experienced professionals who are passionate about science and student learning.

What Does “Term Time + 2 Weeks” Mean?

This role follows the school term calendar, meaning you work during the weeks students are in school, plus two additional weeks (typically used for set-up, training, or end-of-year preparation).
The salary is pro rata, meaning it is adjusted to reflect the fact that the role does not cover the full calendar year (i.e. it’s based on approx. 39–41 working weeks per year, not 52).

What We're Looking For

  • A keen interest in science and education
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Awareness of Health & Safety (especially in a lab environment)
  • A willingness to learn – full training provided, including CLEAPSS guidance

Information about the school

Herne Bay High School is a large hugely successful Single Academy Trust that serves the Herne Bay coastal area of North Kent. We have a comprehensive intake and are significantly oversubscribed in all year groups and in June 2022 Ofsted rated the school good with an Outstanding 6th form provision.

Whilst academic rigour and examination success is at the forefront of our development, we passionately believe that a broad, balanced approach to education is important and as such we place great emphasis on the Creative and Performing Arts, Technology, and Sport as a key part of a young person’s early educational journey. Herne Bay High School is also a champion of collaborative practice, with current memberships to the East Kent Learning Alliance (EKLA), East Kent Schools Together Network (EKST), and the Coastal Alliance Co-Operative Trust (CACOT).
