The headteacher will uphold trust in school leadership & maintain high standards of ethics, behaviour & professional conduct.  He/she will build positive, respectful relationships across the school community, act at all times in the best interests of the pupils.  To create a culture where pupils experience a positive & enriching school life.  To uphold educational standards in order to prepare pupils for their next phase of life.  To ensure a culture of staff professionalism & encourage high standards of behaviour from pupils, built on rules and routines that are understood by staff & pupils, clearly demonstrated by all adults in school. Behaviour should be managed in a consistent fair way in line with the school’s behaviour policy.  The curriculum should be broad, structured, coherent and flexible, based on pupils’ interests and aptitudes.  Where students have an EHCP plan, their needs should be fully supported and the headteacher should ensure that the school fulfils its statutory duties regarding the SEND Code of Practice.  He/she should sustain the school’s ethos and strategic direction and oversee systems, processes and policies so that the school can operate effectively.  Safeguarding is of paramount importance and the applicant should be able to demonstrate complete understanding of the duty of care.  He/she should be able to manage staff and identify problems and barriers to school effectiveness with a view to developing strategies for school improvement.

In addition to promoting staff development, he/she should be prepared to undertake headteacher training if not already qualified.  He/she should ensure that staff are held to account and that the school meets statutory duties.

The applicant should have a degree and qualified teacher status.  An understanding of school finances and financial management is preferable, but more important is effective communication and the ability to build positive working relationships.  Fairlight Glen is a small school with a very close-knit team.  We currently have fewer than 8 students on roll, which means that staff are able to work closely with them and they often enjoy one-to-one attention.  This is highly impactful since all of our students have struggled in mainstream settings and many have had adverse childhood experiences.  It is vital that the applicant understands the nature of our school setting.  It is one where individual staff can make a huge impact and the headteacher should have a keen interest in young people that learn differently and present with challenging behaviours.  We are ideally seeking someone with a practical teaching specialism, for example DT, PE, art and music.  This is because most of our students enjoy hands-on learning more than STEM subjects.  However, we would consider any applicant who believes he/she would fit in with our small team.

Information about the school

Fairlight Glen Independent Special School is a haven for students with SEMH who have had negative experiences in mainstream education. We are registered for 8 to 18, with the main focus on key stages 3, 4 and 5. The curriculum is built around students interests whilst also placing value on numeracy and literacy. For young people in key stage 5, we offer specialist music provision where they can gain RSL qualifications in music production and performance. Popular timetabled activities for all ages include climbing and music. PSHE is also a key priority where we aim to foster the resilience required for adulthood.
