We have a number of exciting opportunities to join Liberty College, a growing and thriving organisation who are soon to be expanding into new premises.

The Role

The role of Functional Skills Tutor is to deliver maths and English skills from entry level to Level 2 and to assist the training team to provide support for learners in preparation for entering the workplace. You will have an active role in assisting learners on training courses to help them progress into education, employment, training or volunteering. You will be responsible for teaching employability, functional skills and British values, often to challenging and disengaged young people with  learning difficulties.

As the Functional Skills Tutor, you will support the team in ensuring the courses are run effectively and the service provided reflects the ethos of the college. You will support the team in embedding functional skills into the rest of the curriculum, and ensuring directives and policies are reflected and implemented in everyday practice. You will be accountable to the Deputy Headteacher.

Requirements

Your normal hours of work are 37.5 per week, to be worked over 5 days. 08.30 – 16.30 Monday to Friday, term time. Full time tutors are required to be available for work for 195 days per year (directed time). In addition to your directed days, you will be required to work such reasonable additional hours as necessary to complete your tasks. Part-time Tutors are required to work a proportion of the 195 days appropriate to their contract.

You must have an outgoing, friendly and confident personality with a positive attitude and a passion for helping others. Our Tutors are motivational speakers, inspirers, and energisers who broaden horizons and break down barriers to progression. We have a holistic approach to training young people, helping them wherever possible with the challenges that life may throw at them, and to join our team, you would need the same outlook.

You should be experienced in teaching maths and English and any applicant should have ideas for fun engaging activities. We are looking for someone with innovative ideas that steer away from traditional teaching methods. At Liberty, we have a learner-centred approach and are looking for someone with the same philosophy.

We are a small team, with an ‘all hands on deck’ approach, so when you are not teaching, you may be asked to assist the team in other areas.

Information about the school

Liberty Training has been supporting young people aged 16-25 for over a decade, but so many of our learners need better education and support pre-16. We realise that the lives of these young people could have been changed for the better if only there was a school like Liberty out there… so we have decided to create one!

Our specialist post-16 college, Liberty College, has gone from strength to strength over the years and we are at a very exciting stage in our development, where we are branching into key stage 4 by establishing our new high school, Liberty High. This independent school will support SEND learners with a focus on those with SEMH needs.

Liberty High will be established with the same ethos, vision, culture & teaching methods as Liberty College, using fun, friendly and relaxed teaching environments to create a safe space for our learners where they can flourish and grow. We aim to mirror the College environment within our school, treating the learners as adults to encourage independence and prepare them for life after education. You can read more about our college below:

At Liberty College, we believe that everyone deserves a chance to better themselves. We help young people aged 16-25 develop employability and life skills in a fun and friendly way, using a combination of activities, hands-on learning and unique teaching methods. We embrace opportunities to learn outside the classroom, from paintballing to trips to Disneyland Paris.

Liberty College recently achieved a Good Ofsted grading - http://www.libertygroupltd.co.uk/what-ofsted-say

“Leaders and staff have created a culture which is extremely supportive. Staff ensure that the college is welcoming and there is a calm environment for learners to learn in.” Ofsted 2022

“Leaders and staff ensure that learners develop their confidence, independence and mental resilience.” Ofsted 2022

“Leaders ensure that learners experience a wide curriculum which helps learners prepare for adulthood in modern Britain.” Ofsted 2022

We have a relaxed atmosphere in our college, and our team aren't like traditional teachers- we are more like motivational speakers or support coaches. We don't just teach skills but are there to help and guide young people in all areas of their life. Our experienced team are down-to-earth and approachable. We understand that each of our learners is unique, and we respect and embrace their individual differences.

We have small group sizes with up to 8 in a group, depending on the needs of the individual learners.

Learner Testimonials

"We have more freedom and we're not treated as children; we're treated as adults. We are treated with respect."

"Liberty is like a little family, we all have differences, and we all accept others, it's a safe place, it feels like a home away from home. There's no ‘one size fits all' approach here- they cater to everyone's needs."

"Liberty is different to other schools and colleges because it gives you a good, bright vibe and you can also chill and relax."

"It was a helpful and positive experience. It was what education should be like."

Staff Testimonials

"I have never worked somewhere as rewarding and supportive as Liberty before. It makes me wonder why I waited so long to make the leap into Post 16 special education. The learners and staff made me feel so welcome when I started. I feel valued and have autonomy. I also have a work-life balance which is a rarity in education".

“I have only been working at Liberty a short time, but working here has been a positive and wonderful experience; the environment and staff have been very supportive and encouraging to allow me to reach my potential, providing me with training, personal support and opportunities for growth and development. I truly enjoy working for Liberty and always inspired by their ethos, approach and vision for the future.”
