Lecturer in English (Gravesend)

Hours: 22 hours per week, 52 weeks per annum

Salary: Spine Points 32 (£30,280 full time equivalent) to 37 (£35,104 full time equivalent), rising to a ceiling of Spine Point 39 (£37,251 full time equivalent) with a full teaching qualification.

Location: This role is based across our Gravesend Campus, but the nature of the work may require travel to any of the College sites as required.

Do you love teaching English? Are you looking for a change of setting? Have you considered moving within, or to, the Further Education sector? We have an English teacher vacancy at our Gravesend campus for 3 days a week. Results for our English GCSE resit learners are almost double the National Average for similar learners. You would be working within an excellent, tight knit team who regularly plan and collaborate together to provide stimulating lessons which engage the learners.

The Gravesend campus is a friendly campus, with dedicated English teaching rooms and a shared English/Maths office. The learners study English within their main vocational Study Programme, and, as such, have a great balance between the practical, vocational elements and the academic elements.

If you wish to visit the campus or to discuss the role further, please do contact Human Resources who can arrange this.

We have had several teachers move from the Secondary to FE phase and for any prospective candidates considering this, we have listed some implications of this transition which you may like to use as a consideration.

Implications of moving from secondary to FE

  • No tutor groups
  • No duties
  • No parent evenings
  • Class sizes are usually no more than 20
  • Repeat delivery of lessons with only minor changes based on learner needs and backgrounds, so planning is manageable
  • Functional Skills learners have up to 3 opportunities to take the exam (FS is a subset of the main English GCSE programme)
  • Greater opportunity for CPD sessions during non-teaching weeks

Continuing/no change to expectations

  • Plan and deliver high quality lessons
  • Use of a classroom base and office
  • Continuation of the Teacher Pension scheme
  • Learners complete regular assessments to track progress
  • A written report for each learner twice a year

Differences

  • We have a strong focus on attendance as well as achievement
  • Each learner receives a 2-hour English session for approximately 32 weeks
  • Slightly longer days (start at 8:45am, finish at 5:15pm) but over a shorter delivery time (i.e., teaching starts approx. 2nd week in Sept and ends in June)
  • The majority of the delivery is to learners aged 16+ (the vast majority are 16-18). There is one discrete adult only English GCSE group at Gravesend (still during the day)
  • In return, we’ll give you 42 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata for part time contracts), and you’ll be enrolled onto the Teachers’ Pension Scheme which also includes life assurance. You’ll also benefit from free parking and have access to a range of onsite facilities including a nursery (Dartford and Gravesend campuses), restaurants and coffee shops.
  • Earlier return than schools – usually 3rd week in August.
