We are a large primary school on a substantial site with multiple buildings and outdoor areas and require an Assistant Caretaker to join our busy Premises Team. We require an active, enthusiastic and reliable candidate to work under the direction of our experienced Caretakers and Facilities Manager to help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for children and staff. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone starting out in their career to learn caretaking and maintenance skills and the role has potential for progression in the future.

The role will involve all aspects of caretaking, groundskeeping and porterage and so duties will be physical in nature and include outside working. You should therefore be comfortable lifting furniture, equipment and deliveries to statutory limits. The postholder will also assist our Caretakers with general maintenance and repairs including basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry tasks so an aptitude for manual DIY-related work would be advantageous.

The role is for 30 hours per week (6 hours per day with a one hour lunch break), 52 weeks per year with an annual leave allowance. Some flexibility will be required with working times which will be discussed at interview but the hours will mostly be 11.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Thursday and 10.00am - 5.00pm on Fridays. The pay scale is set at Kent Range 3 (£19,293 for a full-time post) with an actual salary of approximately £15,643 per annum for this role.

A formal 30 minute interview will take place with a Head of School and the Facilities Manager followed by a 30 minute practical task.

If you would like a tour of our large site prior to application please contact the Facilities Manager on 01843 222553 to arrange an appointment.

CVs will not be accepted so please complete the application form in full and explain how your skills and experience make you a suitable candidate for the role.

Garlinge Primary School and Nursery is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The interviewee will be asked questions relating to the safeguarding of children.

We are also committed to championing staff wellbeing and all employees can access free counselling, occupational health support and supervision sessions.

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure Application to the Disclosure and Barring Service and a check against the ISA Barred List for children. All new employees to the School, including those with previous local government service, shall be subject to a 6-month probationary period.

If applicants have not been contacted by Friday 6 January they have been unsuccessful.

Information about the school

Garlinge Primary School and Nursery continues to be a ‘Good’ school as recognised in our latest Ofsted inspection (March 2018). The inspection found that staff ‘have an unwavering commitment and determination to provide the best possible experiences for all pupils in a happy, calm and aspirational environment’.

We are a large four form entry school to the west of Margate with approximately 750 pupils. We aim to provide a caring, exciting and inclusive learning environment where every child and family really matters with a focus on raising standards alongside the development of the whole child. The school’s values are Perseverance, Aspiration, Respect and Teamwork and all children are familiar with these. The most recent Ofsted visit noted that the values ‘pervade every aspect of the school’s work’, and we are proud that is the case.

We are a school with a Specialist Resource Provision (SRP) for Physically Disabled pupils, a KS1 and KS2 satellite class from Foreland Fields School and a further SRP for pupils with Autism.

We are a part of an established Cooperative Trust (Thanet Endeavour Learning Trust), working with Bromstone Primary School, Parkside Community Primary School and St Mildred’s Primary Infant School.
