Home School Support Worker

Grade: C1

Hours: 32.5 hours per week term time only.

Location: St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 1YH

We are seeking to appoint a Home School Support Worker to promote and further strengthen the link between home and school, providing support for families experiencing challenging circumstances. At St Mary's we are committed to working in partnership with parents to improve educational opportunities and future life chances of pupils.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Highly motivated and organised;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of child development;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of how schools operate and their relationships with the LEA and key agencies;
  • Able to use the computer effectively and has a knowledge of SIMS management system used in schools;
  • Able to understand the need for confidentiality;
  • Have excellent communication skills;
  • Confident with being out in the local community supporting our families;
  • Have a full driving licence/access to a vehicle/willingness to travel in return.

The Home School Support Worker role is wide and varied and will include liaising with class teachers and encouraging effective dialogue between parents, carers and teachers regarding their children’s wellbeing and progress. You will need to be confident in providing a wide range of advice to parents, signposting them to outside agencies, making referrals and liaising with the Children's Health Team. You will work closely with Medway Attendance Service to identify pupils with poor attendance, work with parents to discover the reasons and implement measures to address the issues. Your day will include supporting children who have been identified as having SEMH needs by delivering 1:1 and small group interventions with the aim of improving self-esteem and promoting positive behaviour and engagement in learning (ELSA training would be beneficial). You will also be asked to support the Inclusions Leader and Headteacher in supporting staff, parents and pupils.
