Subject Knowledge Enhancement Courses

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Courses are designed to enhance and develop your existing knowledge in a particular subject area in order to prepare you for new challenges in your teaching career.

You can undertake an SKE course if you meet the following criteria:

  • Your degree isn't in your chosen teaching area but is closely related
  • You studied the subject at A Level
  • Your degree is unrelated but you have professional experience in the subject
  • You haven't used your degree knowledge for some time.

SKE courses are available in the following subject areas: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Languages, Geography, Computing, English, Religious Education, Design and Technology and Primary Maths.

Schools and universities will determine if you need to undertake an SKE course as a part of the selection process. If it is decided that you have the potential to be a great teacher but need to enhance your subject knowledge, you will be offered a teacher training position on the condition that you compete an SKE course.

How long does an SKE course take?

SKE courses can take anywhere between 8 weeks to 28 weeks. The length of time will depend on the specialist knowledge required to teach the subject effectively.

The courses can be taken before, or alongside teacher training and are available as full-time, part-time, online or classroom-based courses.
