St Ethelbert's Catholic Primary School

About The School

Please read a letter from our Chair of Governors.

St Ethelbert’s Catholic Primary school and nursery was built in 1928, situated in the heart of the beautiful seaside town of Ramsgate in the corner of Kent, go too far and you will fall into the sea!

It is a Kent County Council School, which also comes under the banner of The Southwark ‘Diocese’ both of which provide support for the school when needed.  The school works closely with several local schools within Thanet and some of the Kent Catholic schools.  St Ethelbert’s is a successful and happy school offering a caring environment and a rapidly improving quality of education. It is a one form entry school from nursery to year 6, currently there are 214 on roll.

The school has a reasonable sized site, deceptive from the front. There are two large buildings, a KS2 building, a KS1/ Foundation Stage building and an annexe for the Nursery. We are very lucky to back onto the local Catholic Church, making it easier to be completely immersed into the Parish, and providing regular opportunities for the children and staff to attend the church for class mass, whole school mass, prayer and benediction.

The large grounds support many opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. Our Reception, nursery and year one pupils all have their own outside areas to encourage free flow, adding breadth to our curriculum. We have an Astro turfed area with a wooden play area, several outdoor exercise machines, and have recently planted some trees to develop our own Forest School area.

Currently the school roof is being repaired and new security gates are being fitted. There are further areas to develop including the nursery and the IT provision.

The school had its last full Ofsted Inspection in July 2015 and is rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ behaviour and safeguarding’. It also has a ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ in its Religious Inspection. In June 2019 a short inspection was undertaken by Ofsted in which the school maintained its ‘Good’ rating.

Our PTFA must be commended for the fantastic work they do in being so successful at raising funds for the school. Recently they took the majority of the school to London to see The Lion King, and our summer fair is always attended by the local community and other schools.

The school Governors are very committed, know the school well and are fully supportive, challenging when needed.

The children are well behaved, the parents are very supportive and there are very strong Parish links.

The new headteacher will inherit a delightful school, with plenty of challenge and opportunity within a diverse community in an area of some deprivation.

We strongly recommend a tour of the school for you to be able to feel the ethos and community strength of the school.
