Eastry Church Of England Primary School

School History

A National School was established in the village in 1840 and, in 1853 this became a Church of England school. For many years the School was housed in close proximity to the Parish church until 1960 when part of it moved to the present site in Cooks Lea. In 1984 the two halves of the school were then consolidated and, since then the School has been extended (in 2004) and had a major refurbishment (begun in 2006). In addition to the building modernisation and extensions, the School has gained extra land (to include additional playing fields as well as woodland areas) on a “peppercorn rent” from the parish council.

This addition of land enabled the School to establish a conservation area as well as gardening areas and these are used by the Eco and Gardening Clubs at lunchtimes. Last year, the Year 1 class had a nesting box, linked to the internet, installed near their classroom and live streaming of the resulting nesting Blue Tits was enjoyed not only by the whole School but by visitors to the site from far afield. This is being repeated this year.

Since 1982, the school has had two Headteachers, with the last, Mr Halling, retiring in February 2019. In 2006, Ofsted judged the School to be “Good with a strong Christian ethos”; in 2009 to be “Outstanding” and in 2011 Ofsted Science Inspectors also judged the School to be “Outstanding”.
