Plaxtol Primary School

About The School

Please read a welcome letter from our Chair of Governors.

At Plaxtol Primary School we believe that every child is unique; they learn, develop and grow at their own pace and in their own way. Pupils have a very positive attitude to learning and a new reward system has been in place since September. This culminates in a Celebration Assembly to recognise each classes’ achievements. Pupils are also encouraged to take in certificates/medals and trophies to show and talk about in front of the school.  This helps our pupils to become confident young people, who make the most of all their learning opportunities and prepare them for moving onto the next stage of their education. This confidence was demonstrated during the recent visit of our MP Mr. Tom Tugenhat. Year 6 pupils grilled him on many issues including Brexit, deforestation and ecological cars. They even asked him if he would like to be Prime Minister!

The original school “Plaxtol National School” was constructed by Rev Mayo in 1847 through the National Society. The school occupied the property for 115 years until a new school opened adjacent to the site in 1962. The building was purchased for use as “The Village Hall” in 1964 and is now used by The Nursery School.

The present school building had two classrooms, a library/computer suite, hall and kitchen and following the extension in 2000 two classrooms, offices, secure entrance and foyer were added. Outdoors there is a heated swimming pool for summer use, an outdoor learning area in our beautiful wildlife garden. An outdoor play area has just been installed the money and grant was raised by the PSA.

We currently have 91 children on roll divided into 4 classes, with an intake of 15 into the Reception class and mixed classes thereafter.

The children benefit from a wide range of extracurricular activities both before and after school, tag rugby, netball, football, athletics, dance, multi-sports, cross country, science, choir, French, wild life/ forest craft and sewing.

Parents are an important part of our school community and they contribute to school life via the Plaxtol School Association (PSA). The PSA enriches the experience of all pupils at the school by raising valuable funds and organising events that are fun for the children, their families and the village community. Events organised by the PSA include the Christmas and summer fetes, fireworks night, comedy evenings, school discos and many more.

Parents are frequently invited into school for events such as World Book Day Assemblies, Christmas and summer productions, Mac Millan coffee mornings and Sports Day. Parents are encouraged to come into school and assist with reading and other activities.

Plaxtol Primary School is at the heart of the local community and we are fortunate that members of the village have set up several awards at the school. These include:

  • The Cartwright Cup for a year 6 pupil who has demonstrated qualities such as caring, taking responsibility and representing the ethos of the school.
  • The Peckham Cup for Reading for any pupil in recognition of their efforts in reading.
  • The Rosemary Foster History prize for the best history student.

The governing Body of Plaxtol School are committed to both the development and success of the school and to our new Headteacher. To underpin our ethos, the staff and governors aim to:
