Selsted CEP School

About the School

Please read a letter from our Chair of Governors and a Letter from the Diocese of Canterbury

Selsted are proud to be a small rural school, brimming with opportunity and keen to develop what we envisage to be an exciting future.

Selsted doesn’t fall into a catchment area so to reach us parents have to drive their children to our school, proving that over the years we have built a positive reputation of being a good school of choice as more and more families are prepared to make the journey in order for their children to attend Selsted. Moving forward we want to collaborate and build on our strengths to ensure we are an outstanding school of choice continuing to attract families to our school.

Our nurturing environment echoes throughout the school from our parents, staff and our pupils. It is rewarding to see the duty of care our Year 6’s show our Reception class, they’re responsible and act as big brothers and sisters to their younger classmates. Secondary schools in the area have praised us for providing wonderfully, responsible, caring and confident pupils. We believe in the whole child and in this way Selsted not only educates but also prepares and develop our children’s transition into adolescence and beyond.

Proud to serve a community our school council is effective and visible and is made up of elected representatives of each of the year groups throughout the school. Members of the School Council meet each month and discuss a range of items, either suggested from staff, parents (FOSS) or their own class/year group.

Decisions that are made are passed to the Headteacher who will meet with the Head Boy or Head girl to discuss ways of achieving the suggestion either by fund raising, using the school budget or organising activities.

The school council enables children to take responsibilities seriously, helps them solve problems and become more confident. Members aim to improve the school environment, help and care for children of the school, become better listeners and learners.

Discussions in the last year have included Healthy Schools, competitions, communication and posters, links to RE and worship, learning (pupil voice) and  developing the role of playground friends.

Substantial parent involvement is fundamental to the school. FOSS (Friends of Selsted School), our PTA, plan and organise events which help to raise funds to support and contribute towards the educational needs of the children as well as other charities, often involving the local community.

They provide an opportunity for children, parents and teachers to work together for the good of the school and help to promote and maintain the school's profile within our local community. In collaboration with the school they also organise fun activities for the children such as Summer and Christmas Fairs, Easter events, quiz nights and school and class trips and support other school events through the provision of refreshments and entertainment. They listen to the views of children, teachers and parents when considering how and where to allocate funds and recently have purchased an adventure playground, classroom and play equipment and carpets for the school. In addition they have been instrumental in several school building and site projects such as playground marking, artificial grass and items for our Minnie Gammon Memorial Garden.

This is what our parents had to say about our school:

“We are pleased with our daughter’s progress over the year”

“We are really proud of what our son has achieved in the last year”

“We are so happy with how our daughter has got on since she joined you”

“Our son really enjoys school and always tries hard with the encouragement he receives”

“We are proud of our son’s achievement . Thank you for your brilliant teaching, we feel our son has come a long way this year. He is already looking forward to next year even though he knows he’ll have even more work to do!”

“ We are so lucky to have such a school in a brilliant rural environment”

Our school is interdependent we ALL work together to ensure the smooth and successful running of our school. There’s now one piece missing, and that’s you, our new Headteacher.
