Thurnham CEI School

About The School

Please read a welcome letter from the Chair of our Governing Body here and also our Diocese of Canterbury Letter.

Thurnham Church of England Infant School is a caring Christian community where everybody is valued and encouraged to flourish within a questioning, collaborative, creative and loving environment. This is rooted in Jesus’ teaching and acceptance of all, for example the parable of ‘The Lost Sheep’. We are popular in the area and are consistently oversubscribed.

Understanding the six principles of nurture are key to all we do at Thurnham. Therefore, everything is underpinned by our Christian Value of Love, which is the golden thread running through all aspects of school life.

It is reflected in our Behaviour Policy, which sets out our three school rules:

Be safe
Be ready
Be respectful

Our curriculum reflects the needs of our school community and is developed through the use of our Thurnham Super Powers;

Resilience
Independence
Brain Power

The children are central to all we do and key to each and every decision we make. We believe in supporting the whole child – academically, emotionally and spiritually and helping them to be the very best they can be.

The children in EYFS are introduced to the school through a careful transition process tailored to the needs of each child. Throughout their foundation year they are supported and challenged to be ready for the next stage in their journey into Key Stage One. The children achieve well against the Early Learning Goals and all staff
work hard to close any gaps in their early learning and emotional literacy.

In Year 1 we continue the journey and help build upon the key skills of the Early Years Curriculum. Children continue to access the continuous provision and grow their skills and abilities. At the end of Year 1 we always achieve highly in the Phonics Screening and ensure the children are ready for the next step into Year 2.

At every step of the way we try to support the children and their families with any challenges they may face and encourage everyone to be part of our school community.

Therefore we are all proud to call ourselves ‘Team Thurnham!’

Our outcomes at the end of Key Stage One are high and we work hard to transition the children successfully onto their new journey into Key Stage Two.

For the majority of children this is at Roseacre Junior School, with whom we share our site. The linked Admissions Policy ensures continuity for the children and logistically is easier for our parents. The transition programme from Year 2 to Year 3 is effective because the two schools work together closely, with strong links between staff at all levels.
