Our village school has a long history extending over one hundred and seventy years.  It was built about 1850 as a National School using the Kent ragstone which was quarried in Boughton Monchelsea village. Over the years there have been updates and additions to the school, including a separate building for the infant department and the construction of an indoor swimming pool.  The school logo, the white stag, is taken from a legend in Boughton Place.

Boughton Monchelsea Primary school is a good school as  graded  by Ofsted in May 2018. Teaching and Learning is consistently of high quality across the school including for SEND and disadvantaged pupils. We currently have 206 pupils on roll, with a total PAN of 210. We are over subscribed for September 2022 with 31 pupils entering class R.

We have excellent facilities including our new school library, which provides our pupils with a space to engage with and appreciate high-quality texts, as well as opportunities to use the space for learning. We have also invested in three class sets of Chromebooks to enhance our computing provision, and have embedded Google Classroom to develop online learning. Our swimming pool supports school income through evening and weekend rentals, and our purpose-built school hall provides an excellent space for learning and assemblies.

Our grounds allow us to deliver a forest school programme and plenty of outdoor education, such as sport, bikeability and outdoor learning areas for our infant classes.

We have established  close working  relationships with our  local primaries,  to support the moderation processes of our assessments. Positive relationships have also been  formed with  Cornwallis Academy who support our science provision and welcome us to attend sessions using their purpose built science laboratories.

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) consists of a Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Business  Manager and SENDCo. Our English subject leader is also a member of SLT with class responsibility and has management time out of class.  The Deputy Headteacher currently has a 3 day a week classroom responsibility and is our Maths lead.

The Senior Leadership Team are very keen for all staff to develop professionally and support CPD opportunities. Teachers, subject leaders and senior leaders access high quality professional development, for example through the National College, EduKent, STEM and the NCETM. Support staff are trained to a high level using both internal and external providers.

Pastoral support for both children, parents and staff is important to our school and the SENDCo leads on wellbeing. She has trained the teachers and the TAs in a variety of programmes and approaches to enhance the schools pastoral care. The school has bought into counselling services and provides links for self-referrals or organisations to help. Our Family Support Manager maintains effective links between home and school, as well as providing individual pastoral support.

As part of the school’s commitment to the development of the children, they are given the opportunity to undertake a wide variety of activities. These include the clubs such as: dance, netball, football, cricket, tennis, gymnastics, choir, drums, maths, and reading.

Children represent the school in sporting events such as: cross country competitions, football and netball matches, as well as cricket and hockey tournaments.

There are several positions of responsibility available for children including: House Captains, and School Council representatives. Class 6 children love their role as ‘Big buddies’ for the new Reception joiners, and are actively involved in helping them settle when they start with us.

In addition, the school undertakes a variety of off-site activities including a residential trip to Hilltop outdoor centre (Year 6) with activities such as high wire, climbing walls, zip wires and shelter building. Other school visits include Horton Kirby Environmental Centre, and the Museum of Kent Life (Roman and Victorian days). We frequently have visitors to give talks to the children within school, for example local Magistrates and the Fire Service, as well as the children being offered experiences such as rocks and soils day and an astrodome visit. Subject leaders organise curriculum days including science, history, cultural, maths and English days. Charity fundraising events regularly take place too.
