Local Area

Lower Halstow is located on the banks of the Medway Estuary, and lies just over a mile north of Newington;  one of the larger villages in the Sittingbourne area. The two villages have a great sense of history, and both have communities that embrace, and are proud to live in the Swale district.

Lower Halstow:

Interestingly, Lower Halstow’s Church (St Margaret of Antioch), was an 8th Century construction, and was used, together with the village docks, in the 2017 film, Wonder Woman. The history of the village goes back a long way, with reported evidence of existence since the Iron Age. Lower Halstow also has two Grade II listed buildings; an 18th century pub, the Three Tuns and a 17th and 18th century house known as Green Farm House, which add to the character of this village.

If you enjoy the outdoors, there are some beautiful river walks along the Saxon Shoreway, countryside for miles and a yacht club. Why not take a walk to the local cricket ground to watch Bobbing Court and Lower Halstow Cricket Club, or perhaps book a lesson at the local riding centre; either way there’s family time around every corner, and plenty of space to relish by yourself.

Newington:

With the centre of Newington residing upon the A2, you aren’t too far from Sittingbourne and Maidstone. There is easy access to the rest of the county including the wonderful Kent Coast as well as London being only a short distance away. Newington has a railway station so you’re only an hour from London Victoria, and less than an hour to some of Kent’s most famous beaches.

The parish of Newington possesses a church, dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, which is a grade I listed building, built between 1163 and 1177. You will also find a public house, a shop and a post office. Annually, a village festival is held with family-friendly attractions including children’s fancy dress, tug-of-war, shows and a fairground; a great opportunity to bring the community together in the summer months.

With Sittingbourne only 9 minutes away, you are only moments from the greyhound track, light railway, spas, the cinema as well as many shops and restaurants. If you’re looking for a central, northern view of Kent with history, countryside and town life all on your doorstep then the Swale district provides all of this and more.
