St Mary's CEP School, Dover

Local Area

Dover is a town and major ferry port in Kent, South East England. Across the channel lies France and the area is most famous for the stunning chalk cliffs known as the White Cliffs of Dover.  Because of its location, throughout history, Dover was considered to be of great strategic importance and the fortress of Dover Castle was known as the ‘key to England’ providing defence for over nine centuries.

Dover Priory is the main train station in the town with trains to London St Pancras International in just over an hour via the high-speed rail. The other direction takes you towards Ramsgate or Sandwich in Kent. It is also a convenient location to access the continent with the Dover-Calais ferry at the Port of Dover. Another option is to board the Eurostar at Ashford International which is only half an hour away by train.

Dover is a town undergoing some exciting developments. The Dover Harbour Board is reshaping our excellent seafront with its beautiful promenade, excellent restaurants and the De Bradelei Wharf shopping outlet. The new St James Shopping Centre will boast a multiplex cinema and a host of top quality retail and eating brands. In the town itself are hidden innumerable jewels of history and architecture, and some wonderful independent locally owned cafes, restaurants and micropubs. There is also a charming independent picture house showing new releases and classic movies and a museum to discover Dover’s rich history.

Nearby is the Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can enjoy nature walks in the wonderful Kent countryside.
