Roseacre Junior School

About The School

Please read a welcome letter from our Chair of Governors.

You can also view our latest Ofsted report here.

Roseacre Junior School became Grant Maintained in April 1993 meaning its governors became the employer instead of KCC and had autonomy over the use of its budget. All Grant Maintained schools became Foundation status with the same regulations as Grant Maintained and this happened to Roseacre Junior School in 1999.

Roseacre Junior School is a high achieving school and was graded outstanding by Ofsted in May 2016. Roseacre Junior School has just undergone an Ofsted Inspection in November 2022, the results of which will not be published until the new year. Teaching and Learning is consistently of high quality across the school including for SEND and disadvantaged pupils.  SATs from 2016 to 2022 have continued to show high attainment in all areas and are consistently above national and local results. Internal data has shown this trend continuing across the school. Kent has 25% of Secondary School places for grammar school and over 40% regularly go from Roseacre Junior School.  We currently have 425 children over four years. We have three classes in Years 3 and 4 and expand to four classes in Years 5 and 6.

Thurnham Church of England Infant School shares the site with Roseacre Junior School.  There are strong links between the schools including subject leaders meeting together and an effective transition programme. The Senior Leadership Teams from both schools liaise closely. Roseacre Junior School’s admissions policy has Thurnham as the linked infant school and this is the top priority for admissions after looked after children.

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) consists of a Headteacher, two Deputy Headteachers, Business Manager and SENDCo none of whom have teaching responsibilities. Our English subject leader is also a member of SLT with class responsibility and has management time out of class.  One Deputy Headteacher has responsibility for assessment across the school and is a lead student mentor. The other Deputy Headteacher has responsibility for Teaching and Learning across the school. Both the Deputy Headteachers provide Booster Group support.

The Senior Leadership Team are very keen for all staff to develop professionally and support CPD opportunities. Subject leaders access high quality professional development through the National College. There is training provided by Edukent for all subject leaders and termly English and Maths leader training. The school is part of a local consortium and subject leaders meet and share good practice as well as moderate work across the schools. Support staff are trained to a high level using both internal and external providers.

Roseacre Junior School has very strong links with Canterbury Christ Church University. Student teachers have placements every year. Several teachers are trained as Student Mentors and the Deputy Headteacher is the lead mentor who co-ordinates and supports the students.

The school is keen to support the apprenticeship scheme and regularly employs apprentice TAs. Several of these have gone on to teach or are currently training to be teachers. Others have been employed as TAs within the school on completion of their apprenticeship.

Pastoral support for both children, parents and staff is important to Roseacre Junior School and the SENDCo leads on wellbeing. She has trained the teachers and the TAs in a variety of programmes and approaches to enhance the schools pastoral care. The school has bought into counselling services and provides links for self-referrals or organisations to help.

As part of the school’s commitment to the development of the children, they are given the opportunity to undertake a wide variety of activities.  These include the following clubs: dodgeball, basketball, dance, performing arts, golf, archery, netball, football, choir, maths, science, art, music and chess. Kwik cricket, hockey and squash coaches have led sessions in the past for the children.

Children represent the school in sporting events such as: cross country competitions, football matches and tournaments, netball matches, cricket tournaments and hockey tournaments.

There are several positions of responsibility available for children including: House Captains, School Council representatives, Eco-Councillors, Digital Leaders and Online Safety representatives.

In addition, the school undertakes a variety of off-site activities including a PGL residential trip (Year 6) with activities such as high wire, climbing walls, zip wires and shelter building. There is an alternative non-residential week of activities such as climbing walls, cinema, cooking, bowling, water activities, crazy golf and plate painting.  Year 5 are offered a London trip including a boat excursion, London sightseeing and a trip to the theatre. In the past there has been a day trip to France. Other school visits include Horton Kirby Environmental Centre, Living Land at Detling, The Museum of Kent Life (Roman and Victorian days) and Hampton Court Palace.  We have visitors to give talks to the children within school, for example local Magistrates and the Fire Service, as well as the children being offered experiences such as rocks and soils day and an astrodome visit. Subject leaders organise curriculum days including science, history, cultural, maths and English days. Charity fund raising events regularly take place too.
