Permanent/ Full Time position.  Applications welcome from experienced practitioners.

MPS-UPS plus SEN £2270 - 4479

Start: September 2021.

Elms School is a special day school for children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Pupils in the Secondary department have learning difficulties as well.  The school has a mixed roll of 159 students between the ages of 5 and 16.  The school is arranged into the lower, middle and upper phase.  Pupils in the middle phase follow a largely Primary model until the end of Year 8.  Class sizes are up to ten pupils with one or two teaching assistants.

We are looking for a dynamic, innovative and creative individual who is a good team player to teach our Y5 pupils. The successful candidate will have a high level of emotional intelligence and resilience, a flexible approach to their work and an ability to embrace change.

Previous experience working with children with special educational needs is desirable but not essential.  The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to engage our pupils in learning and to meet their needs in lessons.  Strong behaviour management skills will be essential.  Our children have social, emotional and mental health needs and a nurturing approach and high levels of empathy are essential.  Candidates will need to have excellent behaviour management skills and some knowledge of the issues around attachment difficulties.  In addition, we are looking for an outstanding practitioner who has a sound knowledge of the Primary curriculum.  Pupils in our Year 8 class stay with their class teacher for English, maths, Humanities, MFL, music, PE, art and creative arts subjects.  We introduce some specialist teaching for science, IT, Food Technology and Design Technology.

The school has been assessed as Good following the Ofsted inspection in October 2017. The most recent inspection report was published in November 2019.   Visits to the school are encouraged and for more information and an application pack, please contact Melanie Wright on 01304 201964 or hr@elms.kent.sch.uk

Information about the school

Elms School is a nurturing place of learning that has high expectations for all.

Our therapeutic approaches nurture students so they form relationships and to learn to; self-regulate; demonstrate respect; take responsibility; understand their and others’ emotions.

Our curriculum enriches the experiences of our students, develops independence and promotes collaboration.

Elms is a special school for pupils with social, emotional, mental health and learning needs. Most pupils display associated challenging behaviours resulting from a variety of difficulties and needs, including PTSD, attachment difficulties, ODD, ADHD, ASD and FASD.

Our broad and balanced curriculum is relevant, engaging and provides opportunities to achieve academic success as well as equipping them with skills for life. Our highly-trained staff provide bespoke therapeutic interventions, such as Thrive, to target developmental gaps and enable pupils to manage their behaviour and regulate their emotions so that they can form meaningful relationships throughout their lives. We also use Restorative Approaches to build and maintain a sense of community and to provide our pupils with the ability and attitude to respect the viewpoints of others and, when necessary, take responsibility for resolving conflict and putting things right.

In our Ofsted inspection in March 2023, Elms continues to be a Good school.

We have a large team, including our transport team who bring the pupils to and from school in our fleet of MPVs.
