Do you have a ready smile, good DIY skills and a problem-solving nature?

Are you looking for variety in your work and love a challenge?

Following the promotion of our caretaker to a position in a larger school, we are looking for someone to join us part-time. Perhaps you are recently retired but wish to ‘keep your hand in’, or maybe you run your own business and would like a steady second income? Our back-office team are a much-appreciated key part of our federation and work tirelessly to keep everything running smoothly and both schools clean, tidy and welcoming.  Staff across the federation are dedicated to public service and go above and beyond to make sure our pupils have the best possible educational experience.  Everyone has their role to play in making our schools successful, not just the teachers and school leaders and every contribution is valued.

We can offer full training, a friendly working environment and flexible hours.  Ideally you will be a member of our local community as there will be occasional split shifts and we are trying to reduce our impact on the environment by employing locally where we can. However, if you live further away but are willing to travel and believe you have the right skills for the role, please do apply.

Both schools have had refurbishment/improvement works recently, so the main focus of the role is maintenance and minor repairs in the first instance.

You will :-

Understand the importance of health and safety in a school environment and be willing to attend training on statutory compliance and any other relevant courses.

Carry out weekly checks across the site (fire, water, lighting, buildings, equipment etc) and record these in our buildings management folders.

Undertake routine maintenance tasks and improvements to the buildings.

Work closely with the school business manager and executive headteacher to arrange external contractors where needed.

Cover opening and locking up in the event of absence within the cleaning/caretaking team.

Be on call for ‘out of hours’ alarm call outs. We pay a minimum of 2 hrs per call out where site is attended (taken as time off in lieu or overtime).

Liaise day to day with the school secretaries and heads of school regarding ‘the jobs book’. This is the place where all minor repairs / improvements are listed for you to prioritise.

Visits to our schools are welcome and these can currently be undertaken after school when no pupils are on site. Please call the Lower Halstow School Office on 01795 842344 to speak to someone about the role or to arrange a visit.

Information about the federation

Newington CEP School and Lower Halstow School are single form entry village Primary Schools for children aged 2 - 11 and 4-11. Both have close links with their village church and community and spacious school grounds. Our schools offer a safe secure learning environment and are well equipped with a variety of resources and healthy budget for projects.

Newington was extended in 2000 with 4 additional classrooms and library and the original building has been fully renovated with the addition of an outdoor classroom and MUGA. It has an on-site nursery building catering for pupils from 2 years old. Lower Halstow School moved into its present building in October 2005 and offers many modern facilities such as a sports hall, running track, outdoor classroom, ICT suite & separate dining hall.

We have supportive governors and parents and our pupils are happy, polite, enthusiastic and are proud of their school. We are constantly striving to improve the opportunities for all and are always looking for new ways to make learning engaging and effective. Both schools have been graded Good in inspections in March and May 2019. Please read our reports to get a feel for our ethos or look at our X (twitter) feeds @NewingtonCEP or @lowerhalstowsch.

We are committed to ongoing professional development and our staff regularly access local and regional training. The schools work closely together to reduce workload and support well-being and both schools have a commitment to allowing flexible working wherever possible.
