The Malling School is looking to recruit a highly effective practitioner to lead a rapidly developing department as Director of Science. The successful applicant will have a proven track record in the classroom as well as experience of improving outcomes across the scientific disciplines.

The school is seeking to appoint a Director of Learning to join our school from January 2021. Candidates interested in this post are encouraged to visit our school and see us in action during a normal school day, if this is possible. We are extremely proud of our pupil’s outstanding behaviour, our caring teachers’ high standards and expectations for our children and the excellent learning happening at The Malling School.

The Malling School is an extremely positive, happy and caring place for young people to learn. We are a growing stand-alone foundation school and are very proud of our wonderful students and talented staff.

 We are fully committed to continually developing our teaching at The Malling School. We have no formal lesson observations and a strong open culture of improving our teaching together through regular low stakes developmental learning walks and a constructive and supporting appraisal system. The development also includes weekly pedagogy-linked lecturettes and opportunities to work with peers on the development of effective teaching & learning practice. Leaders are also developed, with regular and supportive line management as well as a thorough programme of Middle Leadership meetings to further improve all aspects of practice.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a strong academic background with good A-levels or equivalent and a good degree
  • The ability to teach Science to KS3 and GCSE is essential, the ability to teach beyond GCSE is preferable. Experience of the Key stage 5 International Baccalaureate is also desirable
  • Innovative and reflective in your approach to teaching
  • Able to achieve excellent examination results for children
  • Be motivated by a desire to change lives for the better
  • Have qualified teacher status

Information about the school

A mixed 11-19 co-educational High School of 1000 pupils serving the historic market town of West Malling and surrounding villages. The school is set in pleasant rural surroundings and has its own lake and extensive grounds. It was completely re-built in September 2007 and therefore has outstanding facilities.

West Malling is close to the county town of Maidstone and has excellent rail links to London and Ashford International (for the Continent).
