Information about the school

St Mary’s C of E (Aided) Primary School is a vibrant learning hub, sitting just below the iconic Dover Castle, in the heart of Dover. We have been linked with St Mary’s Church since the school opened in 1789. Pupils regularly visit the church and our very strongly held school ethos reflects this link and the Christian nature of the school

The school is housed within a very well maintained two storey building. Inside the building there is a wide variety of learning areas with traditional classrooms as well as smaller work spaces and study areas, a large school hall, a well-stocked library and rooms set-up to deliver programmes which support social emotional needs. Our school has an unusual multi-tiered site which has been developed creatively to provide outdoor learning opportunities including spaces to play, to relax, to garden as well as our extensive Forest School complete with fabric canopy in the tree tops. There are upper and lower playgrounds for infants and juniors with adventure play areas on both. The school also benefits from a separate playing field just a half minute walk from the main school site on Maison Dieu Road.

We are ideally placed to be able to make use of a number of local amenities. Every class has a tailor made programme of work to be undertaken at Dover Castle each year and being within walking distance is ideal. We also walk to Church, to the town, Dover Museum and Library and, of course, the sea front.

Currently there are just under 200 pupils on role organised into 7 classes. Staff and governors are proud of our inclusive and multi-cultural school and currently pupils at St Mary’s speak 19 different languages. We also have pupils with a range of Special Educational Needs and staff who are well placed to meet these needs. We work hard to forge effective links with our families.

We have a large and happy staff, including a high proportion of support staff who all work positively together towards our motto “Learning for Life with God as our Guide”. We have excellent teachers, a strong team of support staff and an effective leadership team made up of our Executive Headteacher, Head of School, SENCo and governors. We are pleased to be an active member of the Samphire Learning Hub, a collaboration of other local schools. Staff at all levels within school benefit from the opportunity to network with colleagues in other schools. We all work to achieve the very best outcomes for the children.

St Mary’s C of E (Aided) Primary School has collaborated with St. Margaret’s-at-Cliffe Primary School for six years with a shared Executive Headteacher and School Business Manager.

All members of our school community are invested and committed to our school's Christian vision: 'Through the loving example of Jesus Christ, we strive to provide opportunities for all members of our diverse school community to flourish within a caring, aspirational, spiritual and inclusive environment. We aim to create successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens ready to take the next steps in life'.

We aim to create successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens ready to take the next steps in life.

Our Christian Narrative is taken from the book of Matthew in the Bible, Chapter 5 verses 14 to 16:- “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” All children and adults strive to be the best that they can possibly be; our school environment enables all to flourish academically and socially

Our core Christian Values of peace, trust, perseverance, friendship, and respect underpin all aspects of school life.

Our school rules (be kind; be safe; be ready to learn) provide the framework for everyone to teach and learn safely, happily and successfully at St Mary’s.
