MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The preparation of materials and equipment for science lessons.
  • Maintaining science laboratories and preparation rooms and their equipment, and services in good order.
  • General duties in support of the teachers in the Science Department.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Department Health and Safety regulations, CLEAPSS, CLP regulations, and Standard operating procedures for radioactive materials.
  • Providing administrative support for the Head of Faculty for the effective running of the department as directed by the Head of Science.
  • The precise duties would be determined by the Headteacher consistent with the main areas of responsibility set out above. Some examples of the kind of duties which may be required are set out below.

PREPARATION OF SCIENCE MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT.

To include:

Preparation of resources for KS3 physics, chemistry and biology lessons.

Preparation of resources for KS4 and KS5 lessons - the exact nature and subject area for this would be determined based on the background and skills of any successful applicant, to ensure that all areas of the science curriculum have adequate support

Overseeing and or carrying out demonstrations when requested by teaching staff or Head of Science;

Preparation of chemicals and solutions;

Providing technical advice and assistance to teachers, support staff and pupils including assisting in practical classes where appropriate.

Advising teaching staff in the use of equipment, including problems and safety aspects;

Contributing to the systems for determining, monitoring and maintaining stock levels of apparatus, equipment, chemicals and other materials to meet the Departments’ needs.

Purchase of sundries ;

Other duties as determined by the Head of Science.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE OF SCIENCE LABORATORIES, RESOURCE AREAS, EQUIPMENT AND RESOURCES.

To include:

Keeping the laboratories clean and tidy in conjunction with the teacher in charge of the room;

Cleaning away chemicals on bench tops, chemical spills on floor;

Storing materials tidily;

Keeping equipment clean;

Keeping safety screens, fume cupboards and other science items in good order.

Carrying out basic safety checks on equipment, e.g. Bunsen tubing 

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Good GCSEs including Maths, English and Science or equivalent

Willingness to participate in further training and developmental opportunities

Science A level or qualification plus previous technical science/laboratory experience in a school environment would be advantageous.

ICT skills, ability to prioritise workload, excellent communication skills, accurate record-keeping, health & safety procedures.
