We are seeking to appoint an outstanding teacher and inspirational leader who is committed to the highest standards of education for every pupil. Wateringbury is a Church of England primary school with a caring and supportive ethos which underpins our lessons, playtimes, and relationships with one another. We are a one-form entry school with excellent facilities and beautiful grounds. We have a newly redesigned library which is at the heart of the school, literally and philisophically. We are proud of our strong village connections and close ties with St John the Baptist Church. The school day is enhanced with a variety of sport, art and music clubs. Our supportive parents raise substantial funds for the school and volunteer in classrooms and clubs. We require a Deputy Headteacher to start in September 2019, working alongside our Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team. The role is classroom-based, but will include significant weekly release time for deputy responsibilities. Candidates must:

  • Be an outstanding and creative teacher from whom others can learn;
  • Have experience of curriculum development and innovation;
  • Possess qualities to lead and motivate others, both in the classroom and in other areas of school life;
  • Have a commitment to the Christian ethos and collective worship of the school;
  • Hold high expectations of children's achievements and behaviour;
  • Have a sound understanding of the use of assessment to track progress;
  • Have a clear understanding of safeguarding and safer recruitment procedures;
  • Play a leading role in the strategic development and wider life of the school;
  • Have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.

The main areas of responsibility are:

  1. Monitoring teaching and learning
  2. Curriculum development and innovation, including leading a core subject
  3. Strategic planning for school improvement and implementation
  4. Assessment and tracking progress and achievement

In return we offer a warm and outgoing Christian school. Our children are well-behaved, curious and motivated to do their best. Our strong teaching team is supportive and enthusiastic about the future. We are part of two collaborations with local schools which provide a good support network. We have an excellent and experienced body of governors who are committed to the future of the school and the development and wellbeing of the staff. Visits to the school are welcomed.

Information about the school

Wateringbury Church of England Primary School (Voluntary Aided) is situated in the Medway Valley between Tonbridge and Maidstone. On the edge of the village it overlooks fields and the river valley on one side. It is banked on the other by a modern residential development. From our site adjoining the river and railway, our school has been serving the children of the village community and surrounding villages for more than 40 years. It is a vibrant and friendly school which is well supported by the local community.

Everything we do at Wateringbury is underpinned by our Christian values of Love, Respect, Forgiveness, Resilience, Courage and Joy. We enjoy strong links with St John the Baptist Church in Wateringbury and encourage children to take part in important community events such as Remembrance and St George’s Day as well as fundraising activities for local and international projects. Our developing curriculum is enhanced by a range of specialist-led clubs including, gymnastics, strings and drama as well as inspirational trips around the county to bring children’s learning to life.

In the summer of 2021 we expanded our Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms to give the children more space to learn and room to grow. We have also invested in the refurbishment of our library, which sits at the heart of our school, and created a safe space (Nurture Camp). We are fortunate to have wonderful school grounds surrounded by trees. There are dedicated playgrounds for KS1 and KS2, a large sports field, pond, wildlife area, container gardens and a large wooden gazebo for further outdoor learning.

We are part of a project working with the charity Nurture UK and our nurturing ethos is a huge part of who we are.
