TKAT (The Kemnal Academies Trust) is one of the largest Multi-Academy Trusts in the South of England with over 40 Primary and Secondary Academies in the TKAT Family.

We are currently looking for a Headteacher who will use their leadership experience to ensure that our small primary school continues to develop and remains at the heart of its community.

Smarden is a small, highly regarded and popular village primary school situated in the heart of the beautiful Kent countryside.  Our school has a very strong sense of community, with friendly children who have a positive approach to learning, supported by parents who are engaged closely with the work of the school.  You will find the Governing Body effective, enthusiastic and supportive.

This is an exciting opportunity for a leader who can convincingly demonstrate that s/he will work with the governing body to determine a clear and inspiring vision and supporting strategy with a track record of:

  • Raising educational standards
  • Improving the quality of teaching and learning
  • Setting high expectations for self and others
  • Wanting the very best for all pupils
  • Being highly self-motivated and making a real difference to children’s lives
  • Working collaboratively to get the very best out of all members of the school community

At Smarden we believe that all children thrive in an environment in which they are happy, challenged and secure: secure in the knowledge they are safe and cared for; challenged to achieve their best; and happy in the knowledge they are each appreciated for their individuality and their achievements.

In addition, TKAT offers Headteachers earned autonomy over the strategy and direction of their schools, excellent school-to-school support from the centre and on-going professional development.

If you would like an initial and confidential conversation about this role, please contact Gianni Bianchi, Regional Executive Director for TKAT East Region by telephone 0796 0025398 or by email gianni.bianchi@tkat.org.

For an application pack please email hr@tkat.org.

Visits to the school are encouraged, please contact David Linsell, on david.linsell@tkat.org to arrange a mutually convenient date and time.

TKAT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Offers of employment will be subject to an enhanced disclosure and barring service check.

Information about the school

Founded in 1716, Smarden original school building is at the heart of the beautiful village. The building at the front dates back to 1858. In 2014/2015, the school underwent extensive refurbishment and new building works. This was a wonderful opportunity for the school and was part of the Priority School Building Programme.

Four new, large classrooms were built to the rear of the old building and we are now able to deliver a 21st century learning environment within a new single-storey building, a new link corridor connecting the two buildings together and a new outdoor space with provision for games, social use and outdoor classrooms.

We also have a wooded area on site where we run Forest School, allowing the children to embrace the outdoors as an inspirational learning environment.

We offer the best learning environment for children ages 2-11. We endeavor to instill the best teaching methods for our articulate and intelligent pupils. We follow the Discover-Explore-Create curriculum, allowing them to be inquisitive and critical thinkers, always giving their best.

In September 2019, Smarden Nursery became part of Smarden Primary School and the wider TKAT family. Smarden Nursery has provided childcare for the village and local area for over 25 years in various formats. Merging with Smarden Primary School has helped to secure the long term future of the setting.

We aim for our children to develop lifelong skills, the ability to take responsibility for their own learning so that they can face future challenges with confidence. We pride ourselves on providing a happy, caring, supportive and positive learning atmosphere where each child can achieve success. We actively encourage partnership between parents and our local community. We live by our values; Ambition, Respect, Kindness.
